I have recently harvested and am drying a plant with small buds. It was loaded with trichomes when I harvested and they have been hanging for a little over a week. I have always had a hard time determining if the "white" on the nuggets are just really heavily crystaled or are the beginnings of Mildew.
Some of the smaller nugs are just little white balls. There is no bad smell at this point.Does anyone have a good way to determine which it is? While some don't worry about it, with my health issues, I really don't need to inhale anything unnecessary. ![]() Thanks |

I will try to get some pix, not sure if I can get some with enough detail. The grow is still hanging right now. Since I have been hanging in a dark room with a dehumidifier and A/C running constantly I doubt I have mold. I was just looking for some tips cuz its always a concern. In the old days, we didn't have to worry, the Mexican swag we got was limited in the trichs..Mold would have been obvious. Today the stuff you can grow looks like sugar candy at harvest.
. anyway I'll work on some pix. thanks.

Pictures would probably tell the tale. Do you know the strain name? Some get pretty loaded with trichs, but not to the point where someone says "Some of the smaller nugs are just little white balls".

Am having problems getting anything detailed picture wise with the samplers. Once I am through curing I will try again. I don't want to handle the branches any more than necessary. When I cut the buds off the branches and put em in jars I will try again to get some pix. Any pointers on close ups/maacro shots anybody?

My filtering for sizes took some of the "sparkle" away, but I think you can see what I am talking about. When I break them open, the calynx? are little white sugar balls. The buds themselves are small I think due to some cold problems I had, but good things come in small packages?
Anyway, I will try to take some more, later as they finish. It's probably fine, I just dont want to inhale mold. these ole lungs still have a couple o years to last me.

As I enter the valley of the final finish, this is where I get a little nervous. The buds are still ever so slightly spongy, been hanging for a week and a half.. If I put them in jars to soon, I stand a chance of what I dread, the mold. It I wait too long, I loose the flavor and they turn into a bunch of sugar crunch Krisps..I never seem to get the stems that snap as I read about. I expect I will jar them sometime this week.Whew,,this waiting game is the toughest part.

Suggestion;
Mini pocket micro-scope sold at radioshack for $10 usd. 60x to 100x zoom. Just snip a bit of triched up leaf and take a look. that will let you know for sure what your smokin' as well as how cloudy or amber your trichs are. I bought one and it was money well spent.

Get a good LED flashlight that's on the blue side of the spectrum. Grab a bud, relax, and look closely at the buds using the light. Trichs "sparakle" like gemstones. Mold may have a lower gloss to it.
Don't over worry, be overly happy. Mold, mildew require the proper invironment. The only time I ran in to mold with when I harvested seeds from a fresh cut plant. I put the seeds in a jar, and 2 months later there were covered with fuzzy mold. Yes. I cleaned them and planted them. The result, not due to mold was my best bag seed harvest. I moved up to breeder packs after. |

Hmm, Thanks for the suggestion.I understand your premise. But unless it was real special I dont think I would be confidant enough to try that. My luck I would miss just enough to cause a problem...BUT a tip worth saving for the healthy out there.
