I grow Tomatoes and Peppers . I keep three large compost piles going at once in different states of completeness. I use earth either from my place/s or just out in the woods somewhere. I sift my compost through a screen. I add ½ earth and ½ compost. Works wonderful for maters and peppers. I am a newbie to growing grass I am doing my first grass grow using this method and they seem to love it. I am only two weeks into it today though.

I dont have compost bins but I am considering it. I just put them out there and turn them over with the tractor once or twice a month. Lots of horses contribute, dead leaves in the fall (I will pick them up curbside if I see them) contribute, table scraps (no processed foods, dairy or meat) contribute, my chickens contribute, hay, etc etc etc

Its all free though!!!!!

For a long time I used:

5 - 2 quart pitchers Perelite
3 - 2 quart pitchers Vermiculite
1 - 12 ounce cup Dolomite Lime

Mixed in a heavy duty garbage bag, closed.

This mix is very dusty and I would recommend using a face mask.

It works well and is very cheap.

For every 2x2x1 feet soil:

at least 16 earth worms
bat guano
blood and bone meal (from pigs preferrably)

and you're all set.
