Go get litmus strips. They also have electronic pH testers available. Google it. To test, just check the pH on the runoff (soil) or check your nutrient mixture if you have a hydro setup. Litmus is the cheaper option, electronics are more exact and they often read more than pH. Just depends on what you're looking for I guess.

Hanna and Bluelab are well known decent brands.
There may well be plenty other decent brands that I don't know much about. pH drip test or litmus is ok, if you have the money a proper tester is loads easier. They make it easy to adjust and re check.

Litmus works but only for straight water usually.
A ph pen is the way to go unless you are doing hydro, heck even if you are doing hydro it would be fine. Oakton basic series 75$ , milwaukee 600 is like 21$ at ebay.

When I did soilless, I used something like this:
pH Meter It was a hassle. For hydro, I used an aquarium test kit. The kind where you fill the tube with water and add drops of solution and compare the color to the chart. I'm sure there are better ways out there. These ways are pretty cheap. |

meter suggestion
I've been using a Hanna Combo (#HI 98129) for over a year now and it's been great. Paid about $130 on line but you also need a few chems to go with it for calibration, cleaning and what not. The one I bought gives Temperature (C or F), Ph, EC (Electro Conductivity), and best of all...it's water proof and floats. I say best of all because as with all things subject to the Laws of Murphy, it's not a question of whether or not you will drop it in the drink, but just a question of when.
It has a set and hold feature that's pretty handy and the batteries last me for many months at a time using it every day. I should qualify this by saying that I only use it for testing solutions. There are other meters better suited to testing soils.
