Quick light lesson... Plants use light obviously quite differently than humans. Certain wave lengths (Red and Blue) are used more during different stages of a plants life. Metal Halide put out more of one spectrum, than another. (Red I think, but I might have this backwards), this encourages vegetative "new" growth. HPS(High Pressure Sodium) puts out more towards the green and blue spectrum which encourages flower(Bud) growth. Precision growers use both to tweek out that little bit extra. Regular guys use one or the other depending on their budgets and set-ups.
Lumens are the important thing. They are the amount of light energy which is given forth by the bulb and have limitations as to how far they push effective light the plant can use for growing. A candle beside a book and a candle 100 feet away produce the same lumens but only the nearest has enough useful energy to read with Lights give out useful energy approx. along this line 1000w about 3 feet before it drops off significantly 600w about 2 feet 400w about 12-18 inches flourescents about 6-8 inches (for Clones). Depending on size of room, size of plants, and heat ventilation abilities, you will choose one or more of these lights. For example. a bedroom closet 4x2 could use a 400w bulb successfully on plants that are grown to about 2 feet high. A three or four footer would require at least a 600w and bigger up to 5 feet would require a 1000w and major ventilation so as not to cook your plant. Most of these bigger lights need a ballast to fire up. If you don't know how to wire it up make sure the store pre wires it for you.

Thanx,
I always get the colors backwards for some reason. That's why I always read the box spec's.

daylight is about 6500 degrees kelvin.
1800 degrees kelvin is approx. the color temp of you regular old incandescent bulb. florescents vary , however wide spectrum or acquarium bulbs will work, but due to low intensity you'll need many. You need a minimum of 40 watts per square foot of grow. 400 watt may seem like alot of light but that's only 10 square feet.( 2 x 5...3 x 3...etc) there are new cfl grow lights that are color balanced for growing ( veg or flower) mh and hps are different spectrums however either can be used for an entire grow or mh for veg and hps for flower, provided you have lots of bucks. With both of these you also get heat, which can be a problem if not adequately vented. They also cost more to run, and in large grows tend to alert power companies of concentrated energy usage (growhouses) in some areas. and then there is the sun...cheap and efficient.

For years I've encouraged people to get their yearly supply from the 2 crop- 1 season greenhouse design.
That's the one where the greenhouse is divided 60/40 light area/ dark room. The plants in buckets are put away every night for 12 hours in the darkroom to trigger flowering. This is started on June 15 and the plants are 6 weeks old outside. Bringing your rooted babies out before May risks frost in some areas. They finish off about August 15, are cut down and the second crop goes in to be triggered naturally by Mother Nature, some time in late August and ready for harvest near Mid October. A 10x12 foot shed easily puts out 3-5 lbs. per season.Low level, fence high sheds are the norm as plants don't get more than 4 feet tall in their limited lifespan.
