starter set up for small medical grow ~$200

My friend just got his medical card and asked for some help setting up his grow. He's got a 4x4x8 room and only wants to grow 6 plants max. We're trying to figure out where to get the best deal on lights online and only had about $200 to work with for ballasts and bulbs. Where can I get the best bang for my buck online? What sites do you guys use?

A 600w hps lamp will give best returns for a 4' square.

Your friend should be able to pick up a 600w ballast, bulb and reflector for 200.

If pushed for cash you could skip the reflector and hang the bulb vertically.

Don't skimp on ventilation.

No offence to FG, but for the cost of bulbs for a 600 watt you may as well get a 1k. eBay is a great place to shop for lighting. Listen to him on the air movement.

With 4' x 4' I would do 4 plants with a nice 6-8 week vegetation. If your numbers are small, your plants should be big.

I think FG was taking the $200 limit into consideration. And 4 mature plants with 6 to 8 weeks of veg in that size room will be crowded.

Another reason to go 1k.
Ballasts are cheaper, bulbs are cheaper, when you expand you can go bigger.

Yeah, I said when and not if.

A guy with his shit together can use a 600 for the same shit he can with a 1k, that's true enough.
But for costs the 1k is king.

1k ballasts and bulbs are cheaper than 600W?

Personally I wouldn't use a 600W or 1000W system that cost less than $200. I paid good money for my equipment so I could leave my house without worrying about it being a pile of ashes when I got back.

If your confident enough in your skills and you have them i have a 30 amp breaker i ran to my room into a single 15 amp circut with a secondary box and independant breaker to help prevent ash problems you can run your system safely and not need to worrie about it. And im sorry but lights are cheap as fuck on ebay and amazon. For 200 bucks you could get two or three 1000s with balasts and bulbs lol. Hell mine was 45.99 for a 150 with balast bulb reflector and housing. Granted i dont use the housing or reflector but even bigger lights wernt much more exspencive. Your guy may want tk consider a 400w hps and a little 150w mh for veg. Splitting his crop to a veg and flower cycle would cut his veg ojt of the equation as it will veg as long. As his shit flowers so veg time is determined by the strain with the longest flower time in flower. Also setting up a scrogg would hell to compensate for a smaller light and it allows you to help prevent overcrowding im flowering 5 now in a space half that size and next flower will be twice as many plants. But you need hydro to do that many in that space a split room would give you enough to do 3 or 4 in flower and the same in veg if your doing dirt. And trash cans are a good way to do dirt. Family dollar 20 gallon trash cans are more narrow than normal 20 gallon pots so you could fit four to six in a 2x2 space as aposed to 2.
