Pot size and yield. Need Help!

I've got 5 plants growing in soil under 400w and 250w of HPS (each has been topped and they are about 14'' tall) which are 2 weeks into 12/12 and I've noticed they are becoming quite rootbound. They are in 5L pots at the moment, and I was wondering if this would significantly affect my yield if I left them as they are?

I would go out and buy larger pots but I can't seem to find anywhere that sells bigger than 5L. If anyone in the UK knows of any shops where I could get some PLEASE let me know.

With that many watts you are definately going to have to re-pot them.

If you can't find regular pots then go out and buy plastic storage containers and make holes on the bottoms. Make sure they are NOT transparent though. Only dark ones.

Any local market will have a dude who sells what Wax is chattin about, use those stackable storage containers (and I have used in the past washing up bowls!!). They're very handy as you can use square pots AND get more root growth room without sacrificing height.

A great tip I got from kosh and it has since been built in to my flowering routine at every run is potting up mid flower. A little research shows that although Indica's have fairly time based flowering periods Sativa's flowering periods are more based on rigour, if you give them chance to continue they will take it. Potting up half way through flowering will lengthen your flowering time slightly (meaning slightly larger yield and a slightly adjusted high) but is well worth it.

Thanks for all your replies guys! I think I'll have a look round the market in town today for some buckets or something.

I would use those storage containers as you suggested SS, but my pots are a little tall for them and would stick out from the surface.

I'll let u know what happens with my babies.

(Also, I should be able to get some pics up as I'll be borrowing a digital camera soon)

Try a nursery. You just get the plain black pots, they come in any size. They are about a buck a peice for a fairly large pot.

If you are getting exeptable yeilds then simply veg them for a shorter time. Cut down by a week or so and see if this helps. We have went to a cloneing prosses so as to limit are size as well. We now use three gallon buckets instead of five. We also increased the size of our starting pots so as to save more soil in the three's. we are doing three weeks floes and the three weeks MH. What are you doing?
well good luck and enjoy

I am in the process of starting my cloning cycle.
All 5 plants are from seed and have been topped so they grew very bushy, and I've taken clones (2 from each) the day they were put into flowering which are now developing their roots.
My clones have been under a 20w compact flouro for 2 weeks (in little yoghurt pots) and in a couple of days I'll be putting my 250 hps on em.
I'll probably veg em for about 10 days once they're repotted into 5" tomato pots, and put under my 400 hps.

Should I repot them straight into 5L pots from the 1L (5") pots when they outgrow them, or should I go to 2L first then up to 5L to save on root space? What do you think?

I wouldn't worry too much about being rootbound that late. You figure you only have four weeks to six weeks left and they plant shouldn't be growing alot more roots , you want it to be consetrateing on buds , not roots. if you go with a bigger container tyhen your plants are going to finish and there will still be unused soil. Why waste the soil. If you have a easy source of soil and a stealthy way to get it in and out then it's kind of ok. I personally wouldn't waste the soil. You want to use just enough soil to get the yeild that you wantthen don't waste te otyher soil. Use just enough to get what you want from the plant, Ie, if you want them to be mothers then use at least five gallon to ten gallon hieght permitting. We use five's for mothers and three gallons for clones as we are not asking for alot of hieght from are clones we can easilly do them in three gallon containers.
Are you going to be going with a mon plant set-up? If so you are going to need to get another 400 for your vegging. If you have ten clones every two weeks thats going to be thrity under floes and almost fourty under vegging. As well as fourty in flowering. You can see wheer you get into some big numbers really quick. You can harvest ten plants every two weeks though. You can go with just two moms that way you will only have four plants every two weeks. This would be alot more reasonable numbers. You would have 12 in floes and 16 in vegging. as wellas 16 in flowering. Anyway good luck with your progect.
