Proper seed storage
Proper Seed Storage
This is a small post on the proper storage of those little bundles of joy we all like to receive in the mail. Pictures are at the bottom. When you receive your seeds, chances are they will be in a little plastic baggie. Those handy little baggies could be he death of your next crop before it happens. They suck what moisture is left out of the seed and keep it in the bag which creates condensation. That equals rot. Proper storage takes 5 minutes including collecting the materials if you have them on hand. First, get your materials to hand. 1. Your freshly arrived package 2. An envelope/s 3. Rice 4. Pen and log book 5. Storage container The rice will leech what moisture is left in the seeds and the envelop allows them to breath a bit keeping the enviroment stable. Remove the precious bundles of joy-to-be from the little baggie, place a few grains of rice into the envelope along with your seeds. Make sure that everything is at one end and also make sure to let the air out of the envelope for a smooth area to write on later. Lick/remove strip from envelope and close securely. Don't worry about those little open corners the envelope manufacturer left. Now you should have a fully sealed envelope (relatively speaking) Fold it over about an inch where the seeds are so that they stay in place, yet you can crease the fold. This creates a little pocket with the seeds and rice in. Roll it, tape it, and mark it with a "D" sorry, child 's nursery rhyme got stuck in my mind. But you get the picture. A small piece of tape will ensure the folded roll will stay together. Next we make our/their mark. 1. Strain name in full 2. Breeder/Sender 3. Number of seeds 4. Date ? I keep excruciatingly careful logs, so the date is in those. 5. Put into storage A small note about keeping logs and your own security. The best way is CD-R/W and put it in the small safe you bought. Ummm or somewhere else that you KNOW no one will find. It takes a lot of imagination to find a spot that well hidden. That's why the vault. Go to auctions and second hand/pawn shops. You can get a small one cheap. Remember, people are basically nosy, they want to know what you have that they don't. Tell whomever you don't want to know what it in there. That you bought it as a conversation piece and that it has no key/combo so no you can't open it. But it is empty as the salesman assured me of that fact. (you have thought of filling the empty space for rattles in those tiny fire chests didn't you?) That explanation usually stops the curious as it there are a lot of second hand safes for sale that have no combo and it costs a bundle to get a new one. I learned something buying that safe. ![]() SIMPLE STUPID Remember? You may be real high when you need to explain. Curious people can't stop snooping till they find out what is inside. I have a real nice big old safe that weighs a bunch, but looks REAL cool in the family room with houseplants on it. Darndest thing I tell my friends, No combo, but it sure looks cool hey? They haven't questioned it further other than to ask to buy it. I got it for $100 CAD and it is an old commercial model and it really does look kewl. Daniel

Will this suffice?
I just cut the envolopes down to make mini envelopes, then put them i a mason jar filled with rice, sealed it airtight and put it in my closet. Would it be better to seal the mini envolopes and take out the excess rice?
