Healthy Plants start from the beginning

Im a firm believer that when planting your precious little beans that you get them off to as good a start as possible, and for me the answer lies in the main taproot, This must get off to a healthy start and an easy way off doing this is to plant your seeds in takeaway drinks cartons from Macdonalds or Burger king for example, just punch a few holes in the bottom and voila....
The advantage of using these cups is their tall and narrow shape, and this allows the rapidly growing taproot and newly forming root structure to grow unrestricted, you will be amazed at the growth. The way i look at is the height of the early plant/seedling will be matched by the height of the root structure
Anything shorter im afraid just dont cut it in my book, obviously if the cup/pot is shorter the roots will tend to start wrapping round which is not ideal, and doing it this way you can leave it a while longer before you need to re-pot and this will help minimise any stress which may occur to a younger plant when potting up.
PHAT's way....It works for me

Here you can clearly see that this young start is in need of a repot

Another advantage of using PAPER drinks cartons, they can be easily split to help with repotting, keeping root damage to minimum.
You can clearly see in these two pics the amount of root growth

Excellent thread.

Do you find that the Mickey D's cups turn to mush rather quickly?
So you would think the 16 oz cups would be far too shallow hey?
What about potting them directly into 1 gallon nursery pots? (like the rose pots but 1 gallon)

Those look really nice Phat, How old are those from seed? I think I may have asked this before but, what kind of soil are you using there?

Okay questions..

@ BC, Peace and Danny bouy
the plant in the pic is 18 days old, thats 18 days from taking it out of the packet.

@jennacanna, hi.. about 3 weeks from the seed breaking the soil and i dont start the nutes for a few weeks yet...theres usually plenty in the soil mix, altho i do use the canna rhizotonic which is more of a root stimulant.

@BC...ya stoner, you always ask me the same stuff twice....
john innes #1 soil for seedlings and young veg and JI#3 for flowering, with perlite added, some lime...not the fruit kind and some hydroclay balls for drainage top and bottom....

@dandy... mould...mmm a bit green but nothing to worry about...its more of the cup breaking down...decomposing.. .recyleable...good for the enviroment...

wow! GREAT thread, i've never grown before but my roommates and i are going to start soon, i'll make sure to pick up a couple of those...

another question, do you re-use the soil from those mcD cups, or do you shake it off the roots and use brand new soil?

Hey Phat how much of that Rhizo do you use, are you a firm believer in that stuff? Those plants look really healthy with dense thick stems, so green too. Gotta love indica's.

What kind of light are you using?

@ refinoj. No i wouldnt shake the soil off, maybe loosen it a bit...depends how dry/wet it is when you repot

@ LaughinFit. Tis is my first time using the Rhizo and yes im mighty impressed, since ive started using it i have definately noticed a massive difference in my roots, much thicker and healthier, which obviously means the plant will benefit....
I use about 4ml per litre then adjust the ph
Im just using 4 CFL's for germ and young starts

So is this Rhizo like Mychorrhiza(sp) ?
I checked the home page, and they say " finest Norwegian seaweed extracts and biogrowth stimulants"

What is the Canadian equivelent?

It does sound awesome... and the results are fairly obvious too.

It's organic and good that's all I care about. The blah goes something like...

Rhizotonic adds microbiological loveliness into the soil (about 60 types) to stimulate root growth. It also contains vitamins like B1 and B2 to stimulate the production of beneficial homones. Indeed, Rhizo contains a specific hormone (Oligosaccharine) that is used in the creation of cells.

Used alongside Cannazyme (an enzyme that helps in the break down of old root material and the stimulation of new growth) you have a perfect root care combination.

On the bottle it says that it stimulates the rooting system and increases the resistance against illness. It also improves the internal and external quality of the crops.
Rhizotonic is ideal for Cutting and Plants that need to be repotted, Unhealthy and badly developed plants and plants which have suffered shock. When repotting you should pre-treat the growing medium with this solution..

IMO its cheap and very effective, and best of all specifically designed for the Canna plant
o yer its vegetable based and can be used as a foliar spray too....kinda of like a tonic...

Where do you guys get all your 32oz. cups? I mean I know it's from McDonalds, but do you just ask for a bunch of them? I would also think a container of the same size made of plastic with holes drilled in the bottom would retain moisture for the soil better, but I could be wrong.

Phat that Rhizo stuff sounds awesome. The stems on your plants look thicker than they would normally be at their stage of growth/height. Good stuff, very robust.

Yeah they are gouging us, 28 poundages is only 67 CA dullairs.
But wait! They do it to us on all the specialty items... and no kiss either.
Mind you even at $67 I would be too poor.
Yup everyone is rich in da UK

The cups are from Maccy Dees or Burger King wherever.....
just ask for them......from the spotty burger flipper...
I put wholes in the bottom, with a pencil and have no problems retaining moisture/drainage whatever......
if you can find a more suitable plastic pot that is as narrow across the top, yet deep enough for my tap root, then let me know.

Yeah Rhizo rocks......
