i would probably never do anything if i didn't have a vehicle. i have a granola-hippie friend who rides her bike most places (all year. i'm talking like -30, added wind chill and snow). she takes cabs to and from the bar and its fairly expensive and hard to get a cab in edmonton. we have one of the lowest population densities of anywhere in the world for a major city (ie: everything is far apart). we also have the lowest cab driver to population ratio that i am aware of (just over 1,100 cabs for a city of 1 million +) also our transportation system is not great. its going to be a bit better next year and its constantly improving, but its not really adequate as a main transportation.
anyway, good luck without a car. it sounds like its something that will work for you. i wish i could someday do the same, but for now its not really feasable
