The only way to progress is to have your own business. When your job, promotion or salary depends on another person, dont expect your work or character to be appreciated

This remark you made caught my eye.
In many ways it's true. When you're working for a company, you're unappreciated, and believe me, fully expendable.
However, it does have it's benefits. As a business owner, it's incredible the monumental amount of responsibility I have to attend to myself with very little help at all.
One's own business, depending on what it is, could take years to establish a level where it's finally worth pursuing.
It's partly about luck, and it's partly about corporate culture. How old is the company? What kind of rep do they have with taking care of their employees?
I've definitely quit jobs after megalomaniac managers held carrots in front of my face and then didn't reward me after going after it.
Having a great boss is great.
Having an butthead boss is a reason to bail. It depends on your circumstances though.
Best of luck with that!!!
