Opposable thumbs and our ability to control fire. Fire is very useful. When we learned that cooking meat made it much tender, it made for less time spent on chewing raw meat. Over time, the jaw muscles/bones shrank giving more room for the brain to grow. Also, eating meat gave our brains the nutrients needed to grow.
