Maybe patriot is mistaken about a law being passed that required everyone to grow hemp, but his basic premise* still stands. Patriot has never implied that Washington was a pothead and encouraged everyone to grow cannabis to smoke up. The point is that hemp is a very strong industrial crop, and early in the 20th century American lawmakers whose corporate interests were vested in other industries made sure the hemp industry was outlawed.
*the premise of how ironic it is that the Founding Fathers would, by today's laws, be felons and drug kingpins for growing
even non-smokable hemp.
