5-7 is a long time. Funding for grad studies is getting harder to get these days too. My wife is a grad student, I feel ya. Office politicing stinks no doubt, but it sounds like you know what your goal is, so the means is just you finding a space in your head that will serve you well. Perhaps think of the people you are helping via the non-profit and do it for them. Is there a way you can connect with them on a more personal basis? When my wife worked for a specific cancer society she often would go to fundraisers and events for the people she was supporting via the society. It was hard seeing little bald 3 yr olds, but it really left her with the sense of WHY she was there. Her office sounded alot the same.

Face to Face is hard, but having a mindfull space in your head is a place where no one can touch you, a place where you are unshaken about the a few whys in your life, or something like that.

Keep your head up and keep striving man. It sounds like you know what you want.
