Starting early is truly the key to success. Plants that are established with a few leaves and a good root system are much more successful when put outside than those which are grown outside when weather permits. Ideally you would want to place a six or 8 week old baby outside in early May after danger of frost has passed and some other local plants are growing so that bugs don't feast on your babies.
