Canon Digital Rebel XTi
I'm looking for a good starter DSLR that will do well for quite a while, and that I can use for professional looking pictures.
Where's the best place to get it from, and what lenses should I get? I want to be able to do action, macro, panoramas, landscapes and regular pictures.

the only DSLR i've ever used is the nikon d-50. i've had it a little over a year, and i can't complain. at the time i got it, it was the entry-level nikon DSLR. they've since released the d-40, which is similar in many ways, but i think smaller and lighter. the biggest problem i've had is a significant amount of dust has accumulated on my CCD, and it's very difficult to clean. i believe a few DSLRs out there have dust removal mechanisms (olympus? pentax?), but nikon doesn't. canon might not either. either way, you should read into the dust-removal system on whatever camera you buy, because it will inevitably get inside the camera body if you change lenses often.
i have a friend with the Canon Rebel XT...he's very happy with it. it's hard to go wrong with canon and nikon DSLRs, and their lenses are superb. sounds like the package you found would be solid. those two lenses have all the range i have and more. the 18-55 will get you through most nearby action, landscape, and regular pictures, and the 75-300 will give you the macro and far-away action capabilities. i have a 70-200 mm lens, and only rarely have i wished for more zoom. if you're really into panoramas, you might consider getting a wide-angle lens eventually. i often wish that i had one; it would open up huge possibilities for great shots. i do a lot of landscape photography, and i looove wide-angle landscapes and skies. only catch is that wide-angle lenses generally cost about as much as the camera body itself. hopefully i'll work up the courage to spend that kind of money again. have you been to DPreview? it's an unbeatable source of reviews and forums about specific cameras & lenses. check it out if you have a bit of time...people have a lot to say about their cameras on there. as far as shopping goes, i got mine refurbished from b&h. i got a good deal on the body/lens kit, and had no hassles with delivery or billing. ritzcamera is probably fine too, no experience with them. good luck! |

I own this;
![]() A fuji S9600, which is relatively cheap. It's technically not an slr as the lens isn't interchangeable, but covers 28-300mm so is pretty decent for everday shots. at about 75 meters range (zoomed) with no tripod; ![]() supermacro focus upto 1cm which is coo' ![]() Only bad thing i can really say about the canon is it's a pretty supar hardcorez camera, which has a pretty steep learning curve, also not really something you can take outdoors without it's appropriate case etc.., and definatley not on a nights drinking/concert. Other than that the 4xxD eos series are amazing cameras.
