need help with my art project! [pictures :D]

alright hello everyone!

so when my art teacher told me that we were going to work with clay, the first thing i thought of was a bong... but then i realized i can't make it seem like im making a bong

so i decided to make a skull instead

what i'm gonna do is put a hole straight thru the side of the skull, (where the ears should be) and put a small hole in the eye where you light it up. the question is, to glaze, or not to glaze?! i've talked to a lot of pot heads and some say glaze! and others say don't glaze the bowl.

what the hell do i do?

p.s. i havent finished sculpting the teeth (its very difficult) and i have to hollow out the skull cuz its supposed to be "a jar"... for stashing my weed. w/o hollowing it out its about 10 pounds.

so i FINALLY finished my art project, painted it and got it all fired up in the kiln! it looks amazing! it looks SO good, that my art teacher wants to put it in the high school art show!

no help on the glazing but thats a pretty sweet art project.

thats sweet, nice work. only glaze it if you can find some non-toxic stuff. read the bottle

I would definitely go with glaze. But I would also reconsider the placement of everything. It just seems like it might be a bit awkward to smoke out of something like that. Or at least the way you described it. Personally I would consider sticking the tube in the top of it's head and making the bowl go on the back of the skull.

and I'm a little confused. Did you intend for this to be a bong or a pipe?

make sure to put holes on each side so the teach dont catch on

not sure about the glazing.. doesnt clay tend to chip off if it isnt glazed? wouldn't want a lungful of clay dust; wouldn't want a lungful of toxic glaze either though...

yeah, the thing I was concerned about is the fact that pottery is porous if it isn't glazed so it tends to absorb some of the liquid, and for a bong, that's just nasty.

glaze........I've seen bones and skulls glazed or laquered and they are much more eye-appealing!

100% Glaze. If you don't the nasty stank will seep into the crevices of the piece and it will forever smell

I thought glazing was a liquid that is applied to the unbaked clay with a brush or rag. If you want to glaze inside the holes that you have drilled, you would have to submerge the entire skull sculpture ,in the glaze, to make sure everything is coated.
Once it is kiln dried and the glazing is cured, it should be non-toxic for human use.
People glaze clay pots, cups and mugs and I still believe that you can drink from any hand-made clay-glazed coffee mug with no health issues.
So go ahead and glaze your sculpture and just tell your teacher that the reason you have drilled holes in it , is to install colored lights so that when you listen to music , the lights will dance and it would be cool for parties or Halloween.

thanks so much everyone for the great comments. i might have said bong in the post but i meant to say pipe. no water will be used (sorry for the confusion) i haven't drilled the holes yet, but when i do i'm going to say (thanks to Doomster1961) that i'm putting little lights in it for my ipod and the ipod could go where i make the jar
