Marijuana is getting a little more potent each year.

A project at the University of Mississippi has tested samples of marijuana seized by law enforcement agents annually since the late 1970s to check levels of THC, the active ingredient. The testing has long been the basis for government warnings that marijuana is potentially more harmful today than it was for previous generations, an assertion disputed by critics of marijuana laws.

The average amount of THC in marijuana seized last year reached 8.5 percent, continuing an almost yearly uptick, the White House drug-control policy office said Wednesday. The THC level has doubled since the 1980s.

The government estimates that 4.1 million Americans use marijuana. Use by teenagers has declined recently, but federal officials worry that marijuana is being cited more often in emergency room visits.

anyways, i dont see what the big deal is: more potent weed means you need to smoke less to achieve the same effect, less smoked material entering the lungs. i dont see how this can be seen as a bad thing.

Exactly right^higher potency makes cannabis 'safer'. Cannabis potency, I'd say has stayed relativly constant for many many decades if not centuries. While the 'Sativas' could always get mixed up with 'hemp' or had a 'lower potency', the 'Indicas' were always dripping with resin and been selected for their potency since civilisation began. And besides, prior to quite recently in the history of cannabis use, hashish was the prefered means of ingestion...and hash is many many more times more potent than the best skunk today.

^no. more "potent" weed contains more thc. if you have weed that is more potent, you are going to smoke less material to get the same effects. in that respect, its "healthier."

but as far as the cannabis plant goes, its completely physiologically harmless.

Yea I saw this on mainstream tv. Its funny though, how it came out around the same time as the lung cancer study out of harvard, but yet I didn't see anything about that in mainstream media...

^Its more a question of who owns the mainstream media, but as far as the whitehouse is concerned, think WOMD, Jessica Lynch, Enemy combatants, sending tanks into branch Davidian compound. A cynical view would mean that every govt on the face of the earth must decieve, lie, cheat and steal in order to get elected and to govern...a more pragmatic view would mean that not every one(govt) is a liar and do actually put some weight toward the truth for the truths sake.

Obviously, some govts only know how to lie, cheat and steal. Perhaps its a reflection of the apathy and indifference of the peoples governed, or subjugated.....but the essense of it all, is that we all know what the moral of the story was with the boy who cried wolf. A nursery rhyme no less.

In my own experience, the stronger, and better the cannabis, the less one has to smoke so contrary to this propoganda scare mongering bullshit about how cannabis is so potent you will grow cauliflower out your ears, the exact opposite is true, its safer.

I've been smoking for over thirty years. When I was a kid, I would have to smoke two joints to get as stoned as two hits get me today. As a result I take far less smoke into my lungs.

It's good to be able to stop toking before you start choking.
