SO, WHO SAYS MARIJUANA ISN'T A DANGEROUS DRUG ON OUR STREETS?

EDITOR, THE TIMES:

In the May 22 edition of your paper - History may yet prove Felger
right on drug prohibition - Karen Gardner writes in part: ". . . if
you make it illegal the criminals will crawl out of the woodwork to
sell it at great profit to them and at great cost to society."

In the May 26 edition of the Times, Russel Barth writes in part:
"Adults set up this system of drug prohibition which subsidizes
gangsters and their lifestyles."

If drugs are legalized would not the criminal element have a cheap
source of drugs to sell to our youth? Would they not push the harder
more addictive drugs?

Is the smoking of a dangerous weed so important that the
pro-marijuana faction will expend such a large amount of energy and
effort in promoting the product?

Is it possible many of them are marijuana dependent (addicted)? The
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) states in part:
"Young people who smoke marijuana are two to five times more likely
to move on to harder drugs."

The JAMA also states, "almost half of the young people who started
smoking marijuana before 17 went on to use harder drugs later in
life. The study is the latest to suggest the link between marijuana
and other drugs like cocaine and heroin."

So, who says marijuana is not a dangerous drug? The "dependant" user?

Parents need to be open and consistant with an anti-drug message by
both example and word.We must also remember that anyone who purchases
the illegal drug, marijuana and any other illegal drugs, is
supporting the criminal element.

It is not prohibition of drugs that creates violence but the customer
purchasing the product.

Eric Myrholm,

Abbotsford

I did. I bought KOOL cigerettes from a vending machine in a bowling alley, back before video games. I was bored.if that vending machine was still around I'd blow it up.
I'm serious. giving kids sho didn't know any better that easy access was downright criminal!

It's obvious to anyone with half a brain that marijuana is a drug and drugs should not be legal.

However drug use / possession should not be a serious criminal offence it should be treated as a misdemeanor and / a medical problem.
The answer is not legalisation. The answer is to let People that want to use drugs have those drugs prescribed to them by a doctor at an affordable price and not have to buy them on the streets.

No one should be imprisoned for do something that only effects themselves.
It is a basic human right to be able to do what ever you choose to your body as long as it doesn't harm others.

Most countries in Europe and the rest of the free world and even in a lot of the unfree world try to avoid locking up drug users. It's mainly the USA that takes pride in locking up people that want to get stoned.

GOVERNOR SHOULD SIGN MEDICAL MARIJUANA BILL

The bill that would allow sick New Hampshire residents to use
medical marijuana with a doctor's approval has passed both the House
and Senate and is overwhelmingly supported by New Hampshire residents.

Unfortunately, misinformation from Attorney General Kelly Ayotte may
lead Gov. John Lynch to veto the bill.

It is sad that Ayotte would spread falsehoods about medical
marijuana to New Hampshire residents and the governor. Claiming that
"the use of smoked marijuana is opposed by all credible medical
groups nationwide," Ayotte is either telling a bold-faced lie or has
crafted her opinion on the issue without doing any research.

If she had, she would easily have found many organizations such as
the American Academy of Physicians, the American Nurses Association
and the American Public Health Association support medical marijuana.

Ayotte also states that marijuana is a gateway drug, yet gives no
sources for this claim, probably because no study has ever supported
that marijuana is a gateway drug.

Thirteen states have already passed legislation allowing sick
residents to use medical marijuana. The sky has not fallen, and all
of the states have either kept their law in place or expanded it
after evaluating its success. Rhode Island is a perfect example.

These laws are put in place to ensure that only the sickest people
have access to marijuana and that they can use it without fear of
arrest or imprisonment -- freeing up New Hampshire police resources
for serious crimes.

An attorney general that uses false information to make her point is
a dangerous one for any issue, especially one that deals with the
well being of sick New Hampshire residents suffering from cancer,
multiple sclerosis and HIV/AIDS.

If Lynch wants information about the validity of this medical
marijuana bill, he should contact health experts such as the
American Nurses Association and not rely on misinformation.
