Salvia slips into our consciousness
A legal hallucinogenic is now widely available, to mixed reactions
By Jennifer Moss (c) Vancouver Sun 2003
Reference: Salvia Divinorum Defense Fund
While Salvia divinorum remains legal in Canada, with increased availability comes increased use -- and controversy. Australia has banned the plant, and the U.S. may soon follow suit. According to lawyer Richard Glen Boire of the Centre for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics, "there is a movement in the States to have Salvia divinorum banned, as part of the war on drugs." The CCLE Web site details the legal wrangles over salvia in the U.S. Bill HR5607 was introduced in Congress by California representative Joe Baca in 2002 in an attempt to make the substance illegal.

What is Salvia divinorum?
Salvia divinorum is a psychoactive plant in the Labiatae family (sometimes called the “mint family"). So far as is known, it is endemic only to the Mazatec region of the Sierra Madre mountains in Oaxaca, Mexico, also known as the Sierra Mazateca (Ott 1996). Some Mazatec curanderos and curanderas (medicine men and women, frequently referred to as shamans) use S. divinorum as an aid to prophecy in healing rituals. The plant’s species name, “divinorum”, is said to mean “of the seer”, (Ott 1996) and refers to its traditional use in medicinal divination (learning the cause or identification of an illness). Why doesn't this surprise me?
Though it's going to be a hard one to argue the case for it's legality (beyond the the ultimately most important one of our freedom to do unto ourselves what we like but that's not valid in "THEIR" eyes).
Beyond it's mind altering hallucinagenic effects I can't think of any documented benefits/reliefs that it offers.
I'm often wrong though.

whaddayaknow...
As soon as a new drug comes along, the U.S. government wants to ban it.
The mentality of the leading government of the free world.

go to www.sagewisdom.com and read what that guy has to say about illegalizing it, he has a lot of experience with it and a good argument.

I think the gov. will have problems trying to get it scheduled due to the (blank) clause. I want to say isomer but that's not correct. Fucking mental block. Either way, Salvinorin A and B are completely un-related to anything currently scheduled. But who knows?
It's definately a powerful drug, and virtually no one knows what they're getting into when they try it, and actually get off on it. It's a force to be reckoned with, and considering the hype surrounding it and the mentality of most who use it, the stuff probably should be illegal.

i take it you havent gone to www.sagewisdom.org -- theres absolutely no reason salvia should be illegal.

If I'd placed an extra couple of these ( . ) behind my final period, would you have read the scarcasm/facetiousness?
No...?
Well, then to drive the point home:
It's a force to be reckoned with, and considering the hype surrounding it and the mentality of most who use it, the stuff probably should be illegal...
I don't agree with prohibition of anything. I think all controlled substances should almost completely lose the 'controlled' prefix. But if you'd witnessed some of the behaviours of the majority of people purchasing and using this plant recreationally, you'd realize the danger. Widely available, completely uncontrolled, completely ignorant kids looking for an alternative to marijuana or to get incredibly 'fucked' up...and 'knowing' that there are no long term consequences.
There's absolutely no reason heroin should be illegal. There's absolutely no reason LSD or methamphetamine should be illegal. And that's also an absolute dream scenario that will never be realized. Salvia divinorum is real, it is now. WE ARE NOT LIVING IN A RESPONSIBLE SOCIETY. Until we do, I think you at least have to give validity to the idea of controlling this plant. If you can't fathom why, then you haven't seen what I've seen.
