this is totally fucked up.
First of all, wikianswers says about unemployment: "Benefits are paid by the state from a special fund. The fund gets its money from employers, who pay a tax specifically for this program." This says to me that the government is acting like a bank. They are overseeing money that employers have paid in. It is not government money.
Nextly, okay so you test all those 'welfare mothers'. Some of them test dirty. Then what? Take away the benefits for the kids? They didn't test dirty. Take away the kids? And put them where? In the already over crowded foster care system? For what?
And welfare checks aren't the only checks that the government hands out. What about disability checks? How many mentally ill people out there could really test clean?
What about Social Security checks?
Where will it stop?

well that will drive crime up for sure, and justify the need for more cops and more prisons .
Even if it is federal tax money it makes no difference. The welfare program was established as a social needs program, not a drug screening program.
They should consider........
the cost, (if any) of the relatively few drug users who have figured out ways of cashing in stamps for dollars for drugs...... to be (in these times) a part of the welfare problem itself. And well within the parameters of the needs tests without a requirement for drug testing.

Idealistically I can see where this comes from. Perhaps a place that wants to help those people manage a budget, cook simple healthy meals, make sure the people are in the best place they can be to get a foot hold.
But this is totally a black and white answer here.
Do drugs=Die with starving family or beg relatives, just get off ' our coffers '
No Drugs= Fountain of youth, magical power from mountain tops, fairies and the glory of the Mediocre Lord shining around you.
I don't like seeing people who need assistance buy cigs and what not, but I always keep in mind that they need some luxary too and perhaps they are doing okay, but aren't quite on solid ground yet. I don't know their situation, and I don't think the gov't can honestly acess what is acceptable use here. Are they going to take away cigs and alchol too. These are as much to 'blame' in as much as the person using them lets them be a hindrence.

I live on Social Security Disability Retirement.
I am a medical marijuana patient.
MOST medical marijuana patients are on disability.
I am insulted that not one person here thinks we are worth mentioning.

Does anyone know if drug testing is required for professional licenses of any kind?

This is a seriously valid concern. Which would have to be an exception if WV ever got medical.

Well, there is THAT, yes. I was thinking along more self-centered lines, tho. I am back in school to become an accountant, and I'd hate to get to the finish line (CPA) only to find some moody bitch with a piss cup.

drug testing is required for certain commercial vehicle licenses.
some health care professionals, but not nursing homes, least not 2 I know of.
or day care workers ,oddly enough.
my guess is it would vary from one licensing agency to the next.
like........city bus license = definately (and randomly thereafter) , for liability insurance.

As far as I know, no. Seems the higher up the food chain you go (read: the more taxable income you make), the less the man cares about what you do in your free time.
Meanwhile most people stuck in fucked up jobs or on the dole, people who really need a distraction from their empty lives, get the bone in the ass once again.

Answer: It's ok for people in fucked up jobs to piss test because people with money are inherently better.

Way to ' other' yourself.
Why isn't it good enough to mention it?
You are the one with what seems the best understanding ,of the responses here, on this medical mj issue and how it pretains to drugtesting.
People only can speak about what they know, ya know, so I'm glad that you brought it too our attention, we are all more informed because of it.
I'm sure people didn't want to offend you or the other people who are in your circumstance.
In loving kindness,

Thanks for the compliment. I guess you didn't find my genealogy site
I haven't received any donations in years, though I do get about $100 from Google ad-clicks about every 4-6 months, about enough to pay for the hosting.
As for slumming here ... I guess I'm addicted to forums.
As for my disability, I could tell you to read my About Me page or I could just tell you. Let me think about it ...
I was one of the first, if not the first, person recommended cannabis for my condition.

Including you and my poor mother-in-law who doesn't understand that the Vicodin prescribed for her is an opiate and will make her fail a drug test. Just like all the rest of the prohibition, no positive results will ever come from it.

I was homeless for three years, in Compassion Central U.S.A. (Santa Cruz, California, home of WAMM) because the city and county refuse both housing and services to medical marijuana patients. Page Smith provides transitional housing, except to medical marijuana patients. If you are a medical marijuana patient you must 'test clean' OF MARIJUANA for 90 days before you can be elgible for 'temporary' housing.
This is in California.
I would not be housed now ... well, it's a long story.
But I am in the middle of the video of WAMM's last fundraiser for a few seconds. This video was on the homepage of the local newspaper's website for about a week: palmspringsbum: September 2008
This video is pertinent to the discussion as my speech was all about housing and medical marijuana patients.
All federal grants and contracts require Zero Tolerance "compliance".
ALL OF THEM.
The "recovery professionals" claim their clients will all go out and shoot heroin if there's a medical marijuana patient in the house. And the executive directors whine about losing their federal grants.
I'll say this, I never whined that I would go out and shoot heroin if there was a heroin junkie in the house..
