Making your own carbon filter...
Hey all! Good day and good
to all.I remember a piece about making odor control with a rubbermaid container and activated charcol. I have a 85 cubic snap and go tool shed that I'm converting into a grow area. Lighting is going to be a 430 hps with fluros (have lots of em) for lower lighting. Planning on drilling holes near the floor to bring in cool air and wanting some sort of fan/carbon filter to draw it out and de stink it. The carbon filters/fan on ebay and bustan seem a little major (and expensive) for my little area. I'd really appreciate ideas... thanks maximum flowering girls will be three and I'd like to have the vegging babies/clone in the same cabinet.

by the time you spend money and time on supplies [activated carbon isn't very cheap] you may be better off buying a Can rated at around 200cfm.
should be able to find one for less than $100 and it'll be much more effective and last significantly longer than a loosely-packed homemade job. i'm ordinarily all about the DIY, but after seeing and smelling homemade versus commercial cans, in the case of odor control, i'd just recommend biting the bullet.

I would agree with SAR. I have made both scrubbers and filters and the one I bought works better.
5 lbs of activated carbon around here is about 35 bucks. I used 15 lbs to fill the filter and 5 lbs to fill a scrubber. Buying the carbon bulk would make it more cost effective, but 50lbs is still 148$-178$ (all prices are Kanadian) I have read they vibrate the cans while filling, but whatever they do, they do it well. We still have one of the scrubbers in use and works great for veg. But unless you are going to specialize in non-stinky plants the commercial ones will make you happier. |

thanks... I've modified the plans a little. I purchased a air duct fan from the local hardware store, wired it with a plug (by myself!!!!) and I have a duct work outlet for a dryer, the plan is to affix the fan into the dryer outlet (the flappy things will be the only thing sticking out the grow cab) the fan in quiet and more than enough CFM's (from what I've read) for my 85 cubic feet. I have the wire et all to wire up, I used two of the O-clamp thingies to fix my dryer so now I have to get a couple more before I make the filter, but that's tomorrows job. Hopefully it will up and running by this coming weekend. WHOOhooo. Yep I'm trying the homemade job prior to purchasing one. What can I say, I'm stubborn Dan....
Will take pics as I go.. later.

DIY Carbon filter and new cab set up!
So today I finally finished making my own carbon scrubber...
I took the plans from the link posted and modified it a bit. I used a paint can lid (new and never used for paint) for the end cap 36" aluminum window screening for the tube part I attached a bend elbow to the fan (I bought a duct fan, the ones used to "boost" air flow in ducting. that was accomidate for the space I had to put my scrubber thing to the vent supplied in the plastic tool shed I'm using for my new grow cab. I wrapped the screen tube with the sheet of carbon filter (about three passes I think.) I used the velcro included with the filter. I also have wrapped used laundry filter sheets as a "pre-filter". And the outlet part also pushes the air past another piece of carbon filter with a new laundry sheet taped over the outflow... About four hours later and the cab temp. is about 78 f. It will drop off at night as the cement floor cools. Hubby says smell is much better. Will let you know....

yeah, I only have one flowering at the moment, week five, so the next few weeks will be a good test of it.
I will eventually purchase a "real" one, but I've busted my piggy bank this year setting up my growing situation, so maybe after tax time next year.

Sure... I'll remind ya!!! I've added another level of odor defense. Brilliant if I do say so myself...
I put one of those inside laundry vent bucket things connected it to the filter via a laundry vent hose. Inside the bucket I dumped one of those carbon paste filter pot things. I am brilliant. No odor at all this morning. But like some of the "experienced" growers say, wait a few months. I'll let you know.
