Praise for Odor Control: The BEST Investment a Farmer Can Make.
I was visiting a pal recently and he had setup a really cool little room.. it looked like he spent a nice chunk of time rigging a ventilation system that brought in good fresh air to the whole room, aircooled his hood and moved everything out effectively through the existing bathroom fan exhaust using a bit of handiwork in the attic.
but one large problem! his room stunk when the little access door was popped, and the air quickly flooded out into his place because his exhaust was rather weak. even with all the expensive ductwork he had purchased and rigged up rather proper, he had absolutely no clue what a carbon "can" was. it seems like most people who read internet forums about their favorite endeavor are generally well-versed on the options available, but i can also remember a time when i failed to consider the need because i was a penny-pinching DIYer who wired up a few lights in a backroom closet and thought i was set. spending this $100-$200 and adding a carbon scrubbing can or some other odor filtration device to your existing ventilation is the most important investment you can make.. it may be hard to think of when your usual goal when it comes to upgrading equipment is fatter fruits, but it hardly needs saying that the small initial cost sure as hell beats lawyer bills and months on probation without your daily relief. it's like buying car insurance that makes your car almost impossible to hit. so whether you're a fencesitter or an unknowing soul who hasn't considered what the neighbors think of that smell in the backyard, this thread is for you. everyone who has had a positive experience with any sort of device that they bought or constructed themselves, please share it here as a sort of yahookan compilation of hands-on reviews. ![]()

just to start things off, this is what a typical carbon can looks like.. the walls of the can are thin stainless steel mesh, with the carbon packed in between two layers, and an all-purpose airfilter wrapping the outside.
![]() there are many brands available, most are probably packed with a similar grade of activated carbon. of course a person can fashion a DIY version using a large amount of active carbon bought from an aquarium outlet or another source.. there are plenty of plans online using a 5gallon bucket. but doing basic calculations from available retailers has always left me convinced that the people making these cans are getting this carbon FAR cheaper than the price at which it is available to consumers... they're also able to compress it into the cans more densely to make more effective, longer-lasting units. you basically just hook a fan up to the outlet, and pull air through the unit and out the fan.. it comes out entirely odorless and you're free to vent it away. (duct booster fan pictured costs about ~$35) ![]() you can also extract air from your box/closet by pushing air into the unit and your surroundings will be free of odor. (inline fan pictured costs about ~$150 mainly just runs quieter and more efficiently than the cheaper duct fans) ![]() sizes and shapes vary.. typically it is most efficient to pull air through the can and exhaust it out the top, so often times people will hang the units in the top of their grow areas and vent the air straight out with minimal ducting to restrict airflow.

you make a good point
it makes perfect sense to spend a little bit of time/money to protect your crops from the fuzz

Effective Odor Control
I just asked to have this thread re-activated! Somebody is a mind-reader......~ As far as the smell in the room goes, I found a solution that works for me. I can't stand air fresheners for they only mask the skunk. I got myself a Uvonaire 3000+. It is said to install it in your duct work but seeing as though I spent 150. CAN on a carbon filter.............. ..all I needed was to control the smell in the room. Just a little tip on the Uvonaire..........it has a blue light and when lights are off in the grow room, there is a glow. One needs to get creative and find a place where it can glow and not be seen! I'd put it on a timer too..........~ ![]()

commercial cans should scrub at what you might consider 100% for about a year for the average personal farmer.. and of course they don't stop working overnight.
the larger units could definitely go 18-24 months and still function just fine even beyond that..
