Question HPS v's Envirolight ?

Is anyone out there using an envirolite ?

I have been running a 600w HPS for some time now quite happily however I have been growing from seed and recently had to dispose of 7 male plants from 8 growing
I therefor decided it was time to put a nursery together
so off i went to buy another 600w HPS, however got home with a 250w envirolite (they are like a regular energy saving bulb except they are about 2ft long and look like something out of starwars).
I put my nursery together and must say i am quite impressed with the new bulb as it reduces the heat output considerably and is working well (plants are growing as normal).
There are 2 envirolites available a BLUE for growing and a RED for flowering.
I am currently having issues with the temprature under the HPS due to summer.
Can anyone advise if they have used or are using the RED Envirolite and does it perform as well as an HPS for flowering ?

From the desription, it sounds like a big CFL. If you're used to dealing with HPS, you're going to have to readjust somewhat, as the bulb can be much closer to the plant than a MH or HPS. (how close can you put the back of your hand to the envirolight?)

The quick answer is: a CFL does just dandy for flowering. Using equal wattage, MH/HPS is still better, but has the heat issues you mentioned. (400W MH/HPS > 400W CFL)

I'm assuming you're using 2 or 3 of these bulbs. A 250W CFL, or even 2, does not put out near the light of a 600W HPS, whereas 750W [3*250W] of CFL is in the running. I might add that keeping the blue light on during bud as well as the red one will help reduce "stretch" immensely. I'd do the first 4 weeks of bud with one blue and the other(s) red, and the last x weeks with just red.

This is a picture of the light, not much info but I am concerned that the biggest flowering bulb they do appears to be the same 250w.

OK. well thanks, Blippy The Slug,
I was contemplating swapping my HPS for a red CLF however the largest I can find is just 250w and thay are more expensive that a 600w hps bulb so i may even invest in another CLF for my nursery but the HPS will definatley stay for flowering
