The Lord started a new grow about four weeks ago and hath been so involved with finishing insulation, automatic watering and other fun stuff that he completely forgot to place a breeze fan in the Holy Groweth room. The Lord did notice only a few days ago that although all the children were in otherwise lovely health, their stems were spindly and weak, and did not appear to be getting much thicker than the width they initially came out of the soil with.

It was at this point the Lord didst smacketh himself in the forehead and curseth upon himself a mighty and vile oath. The Lord didst immediately taketh back from his dear wifey the little 8" oscillating fan the Lord doth normally use upon his teenage children. Within 24 hours there was a visible, very much noticeable difference in the thickness of the stems. Truly amazing, the veracity of this lovely weed, and the speedeth with which it recovereth from bunghole mistakes of the good farmer. The Lord is pleaseth!

The Lord wouldst gently remind thy Dear Mortal that indoor groweth is a most unnatural occurrence. Thy children canst only flourish in such artificial environment when the good farmer is able to deceive them into belief that they are as the mighty oaks and the stately firs of the forest; They must believeth that they are under the sun, and that the gentle breezes doth indeed blow upon them. Only thus shall their trunks becometh stout and strong.

So sayeth the Lord!

Peace & Love
J.H.C.

I have never used a direct fan. Exhaust fans, heating fans and cooling fans I do have, but none blow directly on the plants

Tis true JHC, unless your intake/exhaust fan is strong enough to have the plants move even a little bit a secondary fan is almost a must.

Jed, fans provide a more natural enviroment for your ladies
strengthen stems (and strong stems can hold more buds )
and eliminate stale/hot air spots under your lamp.

the fan should be placed right above the cannopy, not directly hitting the plants

How come you shouldn't have the fan blowing right on the plants? So long as they are old enough and can take it.

Wouldn't that only strengthen the stem?

Also I saw somewhere that Dan said he had his fan hooked up to the timer, in a place like a closet wouldn't it be beneficial to have the fan running 24/7?

They don`t need the fan 24/24, as long as they get a bit of breeze it will encourage stronger stems. When the lights are on the fan is of most benefit as it helps stop overheating, light burn etc and keeps the air moving so they can get CO2.

As long as they`re big and strong enough they`ll be ok with a fan blowing straight at them but it`s easy to overdo it and windburn/ trash them.

It`s a pity that it`s hard to find deskfans with a low enough setting.

The fan is run off a timer, but the exhaust runs 24-7.

To a point that is right, but if the plant continually repairs/strengthens the stems it is not spending that energy flowering or growing upwards..

I have heard it both ways, the fan right above the canopy will help out any, as Peace seeker said, "hot spots" that can build up under the lights. But on the other hand, the more the leaves move, than the more they can soak up as much co2 as possible. Therefore growing as much as possible. So it might be better to point the fan at the plants, so all the leaves flutter.

Using a timer will work, but you should turn it on quite a bit though. As much a possible. Oscillating fans work best to simulate the wind coming and going.

I think if you run your fans only while the lights are on it won't make that much of a difference than if you ran them 24/7. One benefit is the smell during flowering isn't quite as strong when the fans are off. And since you only need 12 hours of light it makes it easy to pick a time when the smell isn't going to cause problems. Besides, it's not always windy in mother natures grow room.

Fans will strengthen the stems AND actually stimulate movement of nutrients. Start above the canopy, and as they strengthen put it on the plants directly, oscillating fans are best. So saith the guru Ed Rosenthal!
