Critter/Bug control...(In 'n Out)

We've all had our bouts with unwanted, ravinous critters' n bugs of all sorts.

Share your methods of control for whichever bug or critter you've conquered.

One year my area was infested with the African Army Worm......known to us as 'Legionnaire'......a nd not a native to these parts at all. The farmers were plowing over their fields, most not insured and these black worms really mean business in a cereal crop!! Wiping out whole fields in a matter of days..

What to use?? Had no idea!! I found refuge with Bone Meal sprinkled heavily around the base of the plant and a paste made from cayenne pepper.

Netting would of probably been a good night time solution for the moths but the 'Trees' were way too tall. I wouldn't normally use boiled rhubarb leaves but that time I had no choice to find a pesticide that I knew killed bugs and didn't burn the leaf.

I used the edible variety of rhubarb leaves boiled on the B.B.Q. for 1/2 hour, let sit until cool and strain the solution, then add 1 tsp. of yellow sunlight dish soap for every gallon of juice.

I lightly sprayed the plants at night by flashlight.......mor e so when the fields were very dry and hadn't rained in a while.

I found myself battling the worm by day and their moth by night!!

Diotomaceous earth is great for a lot of soil borne insects but I've also found a 1" layer of perlite will do pretty good for a soil gnat infestation. I like to thoroughly water the soil, then add the layer of perlite. This gives maximum time to leave it undisturbed until the next watering, where I remove it from the topsoil and replace after watering.

A layer of fine sand is another alternative, but that hasn't worked as well in my room.

Anyone ever used ISO??

I have and would again........but you must use with and while a fan is running.

I first used it diluted......then noticed the ISO was only 50% so I started using it straight up!!

Anyone else ever try??

I had an infestation of some little black flies in the room. Kind of like tiny fruit flies. They bred in the soil. I foolishly introduced them by bringing in some soil from outdoors.

I kept their numbers down by using soap spray and hanging strips of yellow card smeared with oil to trap them. I also encouraged spiders to catch them. Eventually they just died out themselves in the summer when it got too dry for them.

Best thing for indoors is don`t introduce any critters then you`ll be fine.

i have also thought about using alcohol cause it evaporates but i didn't cause i dont got that many plants to experiment on.
what did you use it to treat?

Thripes. Evil, recurring little bastards they are. The only thing I have found to be of use is safers killsall sprayed 4 times 1 week apart... until the next time.

I remember in the late 70's we had tent catapillars/army worms so bad you couldn't see the pavement on the roads and the crunching of the tires driving over them was odd sounding.
The swath they carved was amazing.

I've used boiled rhubarb leaves as a garden pesticide in the past never tried them on the herb..........but know that the leaves are extremely poisonous and it works immediately.

mhmm-- everything from ants to potatoe bugs, earwigs, catepillars, worms etc hate that stuffs. i think i'm going to give your rhubarb leaves one a try though as i have a big patch of rhubarb beside my house behind my garage..

how much leafage do i need? and can the solution be stored [need to be refrigerated??]

I've got two big patches on the property. Ones like 20 years old and you could hide a car behind it.

I do mine on the BBQ.........I let boil for a good 45 mins to an hour.......use a big stainless steel pot if you have................ then, let cool overnight and strain. I suppose the fridge is always a good idea.......or the cold storage area......I've never let it sit outside, so one would hafta give it a whirl~

How much leaf............so long as the leaf all sits under water, you're in bizz.

Seems like alot of people has got the the rhubarb just a growing away doing it's own thing....until now!

The bears are out in full force-mine anyway!

I prepared a little something for them.........I doused one area with 20 lbs. of wood ashes, beaned the dog, couldn't find a human who needed a cut, so the dog stood in....

I also used moth balls and sat 3 gallons of used engine oil under a big pine.

We'll just see by thursday how that suits them!

A local growshop near me sells ladybugs. Being eco friendly and not to keen on chemical or natural pesticides, a friend of mine purchased a few hundred of them for his rooms. I don't know which was worse initially, the thripes & nats or the abundance of ladybugs. They were EVERYWHERE

I have heard small and big ladybugs are great & you can keep them in the refrigerator when not in use... I want to try them.

Here is my powdery mildew tip:

8.0 Ph water spray... It immediately destroys the mildew and spores. You could spray with 6.0 after, but my plants didn't seem to mind it.
