LED's have always worked for growing, you just need thousands of them for good results, since they have such a short wavelength. I'd be sceptical of the hype they're giving that.

well they aren't they are just saying that LED's need to come down in price and you CAN build REALLY nice ones if you spend A LOT of $$$ on your own bulbs.

I think that's what they meant anyways...

It is true. The cost is coming down now, but a cost benefit analysis taking into consideration initial price, power consumption, heat control, & lifespan of bulbs(bulb replacement) has made me park my HID's... Oh yeah, and the yields are increasing due to the ability to get much closer to your tops than a hot light could dream of...

The Chinese made LED grow lights junk, in my opinion, are not near as effective as HIDs or CFLs. It is true that if you park them within inches of the plant, that portion of the plant will grow but the light penetration is negligible. There is only one light manufacturer that has research from a reputable and acredited university, UC Davis, and their lights work, LumiGrow; a made in the USA light system that does compete. HIDs are an environmental disgrace; so much power used and so little absorbed into the plant (big waste of energy), high heat that needs to be cooled (more big waste of energy)(more growers are busted due to using HIDs, high energy usage and heat signatures emitted by HIDs, than any other one cause); and CFLs have toxic levels of Mercury. I have made the switch because it is the right thing for me to do now. The same reason I traded the Suburban for the Prius. For you Canadians; I hear that the polar ice will disappear totally in summer months within my lifetime (I hear 10-30 years; reported by BBC); that's some scary shit that we need to do something about. The climate change that Canada will experience will be immense. So my point is that we need to change lighting sources from environmentally disastrous ones to ones that are a little more eco-friendly and we need to stop buying goods from countries that do not promote more fair and standardized trade agreements. China exports $800 Billion of goods to the US and yet only allows less than $80 Billion to be imported. Countries and societies cannot sustain themselves on such inequities. The imbalance is even higher for Canada. My 2 p.

wavelength isn't the problem.
It's the led's overall lack of intensity.lumens per meter sg.

As stated the leds that provide "some" intensity are still too expensive and inefficient to be of any practical use for growing, other than in an l.e.d. test lab perhaps..
