Phat does Bubblehash DIY

After reading so much about bubble hash or ice hash whatever you want to call it i decided to have a go at making my own ice water extraction thingy me bob...with screen. It looked simple enough and everyone always raves on about the finished product, nice sticky bubbly hash...so lets give it a go.

Heres how to make a Simple homemade bubblehash system

Bubblehash is one of the finest products you'll get from your harvest. It's easy to make and can be one of the cheapest ways to process your trim too. The sets of bags you can buy from http://www.bubblebag.com/main.php are excellent of course but if you have small amounts of trim or you're a cheap bastard like me you'll resent having to fork out that kind of money for multiple grades of bubble when all you really want is a single lump of high grade product. This is the system I use. Its not my own invention its copied from andycelt over at UKCultivator

1. I got a pair of 5 gallon buckets of the kind sold at homebrew shops.

2. I used a hacksaw blade to cut a disc out of the base of one of the buckets big enough to leave only a 10mm rim around the inside. It's important you leave this rim to keep the bucket fairly rigid.

3. I cut a square of screen material a couple of inches wider than the base of the bucket.

4. I sanded the rim of the bottomless bucket (you know, the rim I left when I cut out the disc) and spread contact adhesive evenly all the way round the rim.

5. I put the square of screen material flat on a clean mirror and carefully put the bucket on top of it, glue side down, so the screen stuck to the bottom and then turned the whole thing upside down to the screen covered base was facing up.

6. I carefully stretched the screen taut while taping the excess screen down with gaffer tape on the sides of the bucket and I was left with what looked like a giant bongo!

7. I smoothed the glued edges of the screen to make sure it had good contact with the glue and sort of 'bedded' into it and left it overnight to dry.

8. The next day I carefully removed the tape and trimmed all the excess screen from around the bucket.

Heres what you need

1. 200g of good sticky trim, chopped and frozen overnight.
2. An electric food mixer
3. A couple of 2Kg bags of ice.
4. A couple of icecream tubs that I'd filled with water and frozen overnight to give me a couple of ice 'bricks'.
5. A wooden spoon.

I half filled the intact bucket with cold water and then put the modified bucket into it and added the ice 'bricks'. I then left it until the bricks had all but melted, this is an easy way to bring the temperature down without using loads of cubes and also gives you time for a smoke!

Once the ice is down to chunks a few inches across I added the trim, straight from the freezer. Then I added a 2Kg bag of ice cubes so all the trim was submerged and left it for 10 mins while I finished my smoke.

I then mixed it for 25 mins or so, with the speed set just fast enough so that the cubes were bouncing round a fair bit

I then added another bag of ice and left it for another 10 mins before mixing it again. I left it for a good hour then, just giving it a gentle stir every 20 mins.
I then got a kitchen sieve and gently scooped out the remaining ice as well as the bulk of the trim, leaving me with greenish water.
I then gently eased out the inner bucket (the one with the screen bottom) and slowly pulled it up through the water with a 'swishing' motion to wash any solids caught on the screen and put it aside.
I left it again for 15 mins to settle then slowly scooped out the water. First with a jug and as I got towards the bottom using a cup.
When I was down to a cupful or so of water left I poured it into a shallow dish and carefully spooned off as much of the remainder as I could each time leaving it in the fridge to settle a little, i eventually used my 5ml syringe to drain the water and then when you have as much off as you can and leave it in a warm place for an hour or two

When all the water had evaporated I was left with a dish of kif that was unlike anything I'd seen before. It was already congealed into one piece and only needed rolling into a ball. I had a little over 5g of beautiful bubblehash from 200g of trim, not bad when you consider all it takes is a tiny pinch for a bowl.

The thing I love the best about this system is its simplicity. Different strains have different properties. This one was my SSxNL , It's so soft that if you roll it into a ball and leave it overnight it'll have a flat bottom by morning yet it only sticks to itself.
I've strained the water through a finer filter as I empty the bucket sometimes to get a much smaller yield of a darker hash with more impurities. This is only really worthwhile with varieties with very small trichomes though. Of course there's no reason why a third bucket can't be added to this system with a finer screen to catch 2 different grades of hash but this is plenty good enough for me and as I've said I love its simplicity.
And im mighty impressed with my results for the first time doing it......

Heres some of the bubble hash i covered in the kif that i collected from my Honey dust grinder, i suppose its a kind of temple ball....

correct me if im wrong, but i think some people boil off the water instead of cupping it out like you did, it gets all of the hash better or something i think, since your not just throwing the water, out, your keeping all the hash in the container insead of possibly scooping some out with the water, but... that would take a while, idk... just an idea

It's not water soluble (especially at low temps) so it all sinks to the bottom

ya, i know that, its only fat soluble. im talking about if there happened to be any lil pieces floating around that had not settled to the bottom? haha, im a wicked conservationist, anything for another lil crumb of hash, but idk, does it settle well at the bottom or what? i guess i havent really done my research someday, but it definitely looks like a good idea if i ever build up enough trim to do it with, ive only got 2 lil plants goin right now... 200g of trim would be a quite a bit i think.

I used a silk screen made for printing but you could easily use a ordinary silk scarf, i was really only after the one grade of hash, the bubblebags use different screens for different grades of hash.
Tis da bomb tho and worth the effort

I used a syringe to suck up most of the water and then what little was left evapourated over night...

Bubbleman had insisted that you use fresh, undried clippings. He came round and now recommends dried trim.

Have you tried both methods?

the way i understand it is that if you use dried trim you end up with more contaminent in the final product.
not a bad thing if you want weight, but the idea is to get as clean as possible so it melts....but i suppose its user choice
