Excellent point. They do love to keep your security deposit.

When I was living alone in Denver, I would just assume the security deposit was history from the get-go. So the last month I was living at any given apt [I must've been thru a dozen of them], I wouldn't pay the rent & pull a 'midnight-move' on the 30th or 31st of the month...leaving a note saying just keep the security deposit for that last month.
Then I'd just use a friend of mine as a 'reference' when moving to a new crib. He owned 6 apt buildings [110 units]. The dude was loaded, but I never lived in any of his places, as I wanted to remain friends.
