Yup. I do the salt and alcohol shake for bigger pieces, but for tiny pipes (at least back in the dorms when I used pipes), we'd get a glass bowl filled with warm water, submerge the pipe and microwave it on low for 30 seconds at a time until it was nice and hot, that got the giant chunks of resin out, and then you can do the salt and rubbing alcohol.

I use the same method, but I also use drinking straws to scrape all the big chunks of resin out, so the shaking part won't get as messy... Also works great for downstems, since straws usually are the right length. I also use pipe cleaners dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the downstem...
