Haha I remember mom used to bring hotdogs out to us a lot in the summer and we'd eat them with muddy hands and all.
In the winter it was really sad because it'd freeze up and so me and my siblings couldn't play in it. But for christmas mom and dad would fill one of those plastic kiddy pools with mud in the basement, just to make the day extra special for us.
Sometimes you'd find frogs and stuff in it too which was always really cool to see.

i remember doing that as a kid as well. not at my house though, my friend down the street had a little mud pit like the one you described. my mom would be so pissed when my brother and I came home covered in mud.
