In many ways it's true. When you're working for a company, you're unappreciated, and believe me, fully expendable. However, it does have it's benefits. As a business owner, it's incredible the monumental amount of responsibility I have to attend to myself with very little help at all. One's own business, depending on what it is, could take years to establish a level where it's finally worth pursuing. It's partly about luck, and it's partly about corporate culture. How old is the company? What kind of rep do they have with taking care of their employees? I've definitely quit jobs after megalomaniac managers held carrots in front of my face and then didn't reward me after going after it. Having a great boss is great. Having an butthead boss is a reason to bail. It depends on your circumstances though. Best of luck with that!!! ![]() |

My boss has some issues as well, and is pretty much the patron saint of morale assassination. He yells at the women in the office until they cry and shit. Any time you have a problem with something, he throws it back in your face. In fact, I was his golden boy for the first 6 months I was there, then I complained about something, and now I'm persona non grata; I went from pat on the head to pissing on my head in 4.8 seconds.

My last boss was like that.^
He was a great old skewl salesman, with a massive ego. I was a BDM and he had a go at me for managing, like I was treating on his toes. He yelled at everyone all the time, it was never his fault, but he always had a beer with you at the end of the day, so it was hard to dislike him for long. Sometimes two people wont get along. |

It seems like, when you work for a company or boss, its not (only) your actual work skills that matter, but also a bunch of other things like politics, ass kissing, pr, hanging around with "the clique" in after-work hours, being a relative or best friend with someone in higher management, etc.
Sometimes these "other things" are more important (to management) than your actual work. I know people who work ALOT more than those who keep on kissing ass and playing "friend" to management, but for some reason these hard workers never make management, while no-skill ass kissers, grow and get promoted. It seems pointless to me, for someone to consume his energy, skill and business experience, in a company that doesnt reward the individual based on his work, team spirit, character and achievement, but rather on his pr skills. And if someone decided to fullfill this "corporate role" and be both the good/productive employee as well as someone who is there in all the company events (consuming himself so he can be liked by the long-face higher management and basically having no personal life in order to be elligible for a promotion) then IMO this person is putting way too much effort for a job that aint worth it. If this person, put the same amount of energy into his own business, he would grow at a much faster rate, while at the same time building a strong foundation for the future. Because we all know that no matter how good or loyal an employee might be for a company, he is always replacable.. |
