So I sold off my car because...

I'm done with cars for now. And my friends keep making fun of me as if it's shameful to ride the bus or walk. But personally I'm very proud of myself and I feel it's one of the smartest decisions I've made as of late. Not only do I have a couple extra grand in the bank from the car money but I also cut my transportation expenses to shreds by walking to the stores (I live near a strip mall) and taking the bus to work. Not to mention the money I save without insurance!!! My parents, friends and coworkers for some reason don't understand this. No matter how many times i explain to them the economic benifits, the environmental benifits and the health benefits they still look at me with this look their face like "Yeah... but it's the bus!". It's no wonder so many Oregonians are overweight with that attitude. It's like get your on your feet for a change. Stop relying on a big ass SUV to get scoot your lazy ass around.

Also it's fantastic way to get to know your surroundings. Once you step outside of your sheltered car cabin you realize that there's a community out there and recognizable faces everywhere. It is a small world after all.

Los Angeles had an amazing public transit system back in the early part of the 20th century.

I would use the public transportaion around here, like the dart, but the city I live in and near by wont put the dart in the city. It really pisses me off. Its really handy, goes all the way through dallas, and you can get to fortworth also by it.

i would probably never do anything if i didn't have a vehicle. i have a granola-hippie friend who rides her bike most places (all year. i'm talking like -30, added wind chill and snow). she takes cabs to and from the bar and its fairly expensive and hard to get a cab in edmonton. we have one of the lowest population densities of anywhere in the world for a major city (ie: everything is far apart). we also have the lowest cab driver to population ratio that i am aware of (just over 1,100 cabs for a city of 1 million +) also our transportation system is not great. its going to be a bit better next year and its constantly improving, but its not really adequate as a main transportation.

anyway, good luck without a car. it sounds like its something that will work for you. i wish i could someday do the same, but for now its not really feasable

i'm not dependent on a vehicle when i don't need it. i explained in plain english that not owning a vehicle would not be feasible where i am currently living with what i am currently doing. my granola-hippie friend i described still owns a car and drives it occasionally. like i said before: not very many cabs/expensive/time wasting waiting for cab/busy signal from cab company during peak times + inadequate public transport + everything in my city is spread far apart = needing a vehicle or else not going anywhere.
