need advice indoor palm grow op
i had this palm tree that grew too tall for its container. my mom was gonna throw it out, but i decided to chop the top off and put the thing in water. i figure i'll keep it in water till it starts popping out some roots, then stick it a pot with soil, water it etc.
considering that the original plant was started from another palm stick that was chopped off another palm, how good are the changes of this one adapting to its new environment as well? ill post some shots in a bit

I can't remember the name of the stuff, but if you go to wal-mart or similar type store, you can get some stuff to make it grow roots.. You just add it to the water then soil.

whats that stuff that makes the roots grow again?
its been exactly a day since i put it in water, no signs of roots forming, no signs of it dying yet, although one leaf is slightly curled up from before its amputation and relocation. but im not giving up hope yet, as the parent plant took 3 weeks to start forming roots in water. here's a picture of what mine looked like before the top was cut off. it was a bit shorter, had only 4 big leaves, and the trunk was crooked (the reason it was about to be thrown out; pic isnt mine btw), but otherwise exactly the same. cad: yes, it is a diefenbackia, i found below pic by googling "defenbackia". doesnt look like a lot of people have them.

Thats a 'Chinese Evergreen' (aglaonema). You can't kill it, you can root it in water or just take a stalk and jam it down in some dirt, it'll grow. They put out some neat little flowers too.

I imagine you would change the water when it starts to look like it needs changing, but I would guess not too often so you dont shock the roots, like a Chinese water bamboo.
Did you know some species of Bamboo can grow up to 32" a day! You can literally sit and watch it grow, you know, if you had nothing better to do. But anyway, back to your plant, you can grow it in soil as well. They can get ugly when they get large, keep propagating it into little guys and litter the room with 'em.

how do i know when the water looks like it needs changing? also how often is too often?
would it be a good idea to sort of pour out like 1/2 of the water in the bowl, then top it off more water? this is my first plant ever, so i dont know much about growing.

Ideally, you should have to top off the water every so often as the plant will suck it up, evaporation is also a factor as well. You won't have to worry about pouring any off. Eventually though it will get slimy and should be cleaned, like a fish bowl, but not nearly as often.
Edit: Holy FUCK that is one damned ugly fucking dog...
