Music recommendations?
I was looking through my musical library and I feel like it hasn't changed much the past few years. Anybody got any suggestions for something new to try? Some of my favorite artists are Keane, System of a Down, Zeppelin, Breaking Benjamin, Death Cab, Flogging Molly, Josh Groban, and stuff like that.
I guess this is also a cheap way to meet people with different musical tastes. ![]() |

Not sure what to recommend with your musical tastes. Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Caetano Veloso, and Sound Tribe have been some favorites lately.

Pandora Radio - Listen to Free Internet Radio, Find New Music
You can put in an artist/song/genre that you like and it will play you other songs based off of that. Only works if you're in the U.S. now, though (such bullshit)

Pandora is cool but if you have a really weird taste, like I do, then it can start to repeat shit.
CAKE Dread Zeppelin Rusted Root The Polyphonic Spree Lord Sitar Sometimes I just turn on WinAmp radio and click random links, hour or so of Tibetan chants or African bush music, whatever I zone out while I'm here.

Thanks for the Pandora tip. I posted earlier in hopes I can spew out a few random artists I like and somehow get different artists spewed back that I also like. This does it automatically! Awesome.

some east coast indie rock like North of America, State Champs, The Inbreds, and Sloan are all pretty dope.
as far as classic reggae, i'm more of a toots and the maytals and barrington levy man. if you want to check out some of zeppelin's and the beatles influences, check out some bo diddley and huey 'piano' smith. El Paso, At the Drive-In and the mars volta are all pretty much the same parts and all pretty dope. atdi especially; the volta had one of my favourite records haver [de-loused] but their other work has been pretty hit and miss to me. atdi's always been a favourite though. i grew up listening more so to non-gangster hip-hop like Arrested Development, the prince and jazzy jeff, the pharcyde, kurious, d.dumile [doom, zev luv x, viktor vaughn, etc], and my all time favourite Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf.

i would say explore the roots music. go back before rock and explore blues. delta blues, country blues, whatever. it is the music that inspired the musicians of the 60s. if you like that you will at least find it interesting.
Blues - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia i also like ska and reggae. weird folk music is pretty cool too. african guitar summit rules. ali farke toure, pa joe, alpha yaya diallo, madagascar slim, kofi ackah, adam solomon, donne roberts, might popo and ry cooder are all worth checking out. try expanding your collection globally. get some stuff from africa, australia, india, etc and give it a fair shot. theres good music coming from everywhere if you look for it. also going to shows and supporting local bands is cool. live music pretty much blows away any recording

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody. I've tried out some of what's been posted, and I'm finding some good stuff.
It's going to take a while to go through everything I want to try, but good music is always worth the effort to find. |
