Culture and compliments

So I am doing a paper on complimenting people in a country other than America. If anyone familiar with the customs of another country would like to answer a few questions I would much appreciate it! I need to incorporate a source from a real person.

Question 1: What are typical compliments in the culture?

QUESTION 2: Who generally compliments whom?

QUESTION 3: What are appropriate compliments?

QUESTION 4: Are there appropriate compliments in only certain situations?

QUESTION 5: To whom are the compliments directed towards?

QUESTION 6: What are appropriate responses to compliments?

This sounds interesting, but unfortunately I'm also from the states.

What class is this paper for?

Germans don't compliment much at all, they're more comfortable criticizing, but they really, really, really mean it when they do. The proper response is to nod and stare at the other person as you savor the utter seriousness and joylessness of this moment and every other moment in life.

In Japan "cin cin"(chin chin) means cock or penis.
But in Italy it means Sláinte(cheers).
