Anyone know anything about dogs?
I just started running and biking, and everyday I bike 6-12 K. I take my sisters dog with me. He is a chocolate lab, and he goes running and biking all the time, not to mention gravel runs, and four wheeling, so he is pretty slim, and muscular. But when he goes out w/ me he gets so tired, like his nose has slobber all around it. and hes hanging his tongue out to one side. Im scared he is going to have a heart attck, but when i slow down for a while so he can just trot real slow, he runs ahead, then runs back to me yipping for me to go faster, then runs ahead again. Should I not take him when it is this hot out?

If it's over 85 degrees F ( I have no idea what that is in C, I'm American you know), then yeah, I'd leave him at home. Also the pace of a bicycle isn't all that conducive for exercise for doggies. A Nice walk, even a slog jog is good for their pace, but every time I see a bicyclist and a dog together I feel bad for the dog.

A slow jog for you is like walking for the dog. A dog can run and travel much faster than you. And, much more easily. He's not doing near the exercise you are when you jog.
So, a slow jog really isn't that good a pace for a dog cause it's actually too slow. It's not that much exercise for the dog, at all. Your average bicycle pace probably IS a good pace for the dog. I am sure that you are probably not killing yourself on your bike, what is the average mph would you estimate you bike at? I agree with those that say monitor your pace and the heat outside. The dog does have fur. But, dogs are pack animals, and meant to run, at great lengths and distances, to catch prey, many times. Ever seen a wolf pack or wild dogs wear another animal out cause they just keep running, etc? Or, have you played with a dog that just runs and runs and runs and wears you out? Your dog is fine running next to you, especially if he wants to! He knows when he's worn out, and he'll let you know. Just be smart about it, don't push him when it's really hot or if he really doesn't want to do it. |

Dogs are meant to RUN. They are meant to get lots of exercise and most don't get it. Walking your dog gives it hardly any exercise. It needs to run, and run for a while.
I would suggest being careful when you run your dog on cement cause, just like you and me, it's not built to run on cement. You need pads on your foot, it probably does too. he's better off being run in grass, etc. Gauge your dog's pace, watch if he's getting tired, etc. Build his stamina up slowly, then gradually bike a little faster and a little longer. Your dog can easily run 5 to 7 miles with you, no problem. And, watch how hot it is outside. And, he might run ahead of you when you slow down, just cause he thinks you're going to stop. He wants to keep going. He's having fun. I'll bet if you slow down for a while, and just keep going at that pace, nad keep doing this, he'll learn that you aren't quitting, and learning that you are actually "mixing the pace up". After a while, he'll get used to the "run", to the differences in pace, etc. I guess i would also say don't listen to anyone on Yahooka. What do we know about dogs and biking? I wouldn't trust most of what you hear, unfortunately. Lots of people who don't know what they are talking about giving you their OPINIONS. Look the info up on the Internet, somewhere. But, anybody who says just walk your dog, that isn't going to help him/her. |

It was about 24 Celcius yesterday, so like 75 fahrenheit.
And, I dont wear myself out when i go biking. just a nice comfortable pace, and the dog is doing a slow run, fast jog.

one of our members, Cerebro, is a professional dog trainer
Personally I used to run my dog 20 to 30 kilometers each day in the tropical heat of Darwin when he was a young dog, he's going on 12 now with no ill effects.

dogs perspire mainly through their tongues so that is why your dog is breathing hard and hanging his tongue out of his mouth.
i'm not going to recommend you run a marathon with a chihuahua, but larger dogs need lots of running and its probably really good for him. obviously be mindful of the temperature outside. some dogs won't ever stop running even if they are hurting themselves or exhausted. basically you just need to use some common sense

I agree with anyone suggesting more exercise, rather than less, for dogs.
It's next to impossible to give a dog of average size or more adequate exercise, so I wouldn't worry. The panting and tongue out etc is a far superior method of reducing temperature. The dog needs to work. The main things to watch for are toy dogs, heavy/overweight dogs, young pups with developing bones and old dogs with arthritis etc. If your dog falls outside those criteria then go for it. It's true that some dogs will run until they die, but it's not true that they won't slow down before they die. Just watch for signs of distress, or slowing, and you'll be fine. Riding a road bike was the only I could exercise my Weimaraner, when she was in her prime she could keep up with a car through suburban streets for about 10mins. |

I used to train seeing eye dogs-
it's okay to bike with them. First start off with slow runs because if you are on cement, then the pads of their foots can sometimes peel off... If you go on frequent slow runs then the dog can form somewhat of callouses on his feet. Which is a good thing. Also, i think as someone else has mentioned, if you think the dog is getting too tierd... Stop alopng the path and just sit in the grass or by a creek or something. If you dont want to stop-- Just start walking and hold the bike along side you. also keep water in the car. |
