Clove cigarettes (all flavored cigs) banned in U.S.
The FDA?s flavored-cigarette ban - THE WEEK
|
Quote:
|
What happened
The Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of clove-, fruit-, and candy-flavored cigarettes, effective Tuesday, in an effort to close a “gateway” to smoking by young people. The ban was the FDA’s first flexing of regulatory authority gained under a smoking-prevention law that was approved in June (Los Angeles Times).
What the commentators said
Now that “would-be hipsters" won’t be “puffing on clove cigarettes and strawberry bidis anymore,” said Lita Beck in NBC Dallas, the anti-tobacco fight is moving on to differentiating between clove cigarettes and clove cigars, and the more politically touchy issue of menthol, “by far the most popular cigarette flavor,” which isn't covered in the ban.
Without a menthol ban, “criminalizing the sale of smokes with flavors like strawberry and vanilla” doesn’t do much good, said The Minnesota Daily in an editorial. It does, however, let “tobacco monolith” and menthol purveyor Philip Morris—which “shrewdly” backed FDA control over tobacco—use the FDA to freeze smaller, often foreign competitors out of the U.S. market.
The lack of a menthol ban is a shame, said The Louisville Courier-Journal in an editorial, but even though other flavored smokes make up just “a small niche in the cigarette market,” it’s a niche aimed squarely at tempting teenagers. Besides, smoking bans of any scope are worth pursuing—two large studies just found, independently, that cities that curbed smoking in public spaces had 17 percent fewer heart attacks after a year.

WTF kinda stupid shit is this? i personally hate clove smokes, or flavored smokes in general (besides menthol), but seriously, WTF?? ridiculous.
they will never ban menthol imo, too much profit. i, unfortunately, am a menthol smoker.

Cloves rip my lungs apart. This is lame for many reasons though. I wonder why they wasted there time regulating what people smoke more? It's already bullshit enough they raised the price on cigarette tax.

It's only a matter of time before they take away flavored foods too, can't let kids get hooked on the deliciousness lest they eat too much...

It just means that companies are repackaging and reselling them as flavored cigars instead of flavored ciggies....These products will still be available, albeit by a different name...

In 2009, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was introduced in the US Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama, giving the FDA significantly more regulatory power over tobacco; one of the provisions in the law includes a ban on the use of flavors in tobacco, other than menthol. The ban includes kreteks. As of September 21, 2009 the clove cigarette were no longer legal in the US. However, Kretek International Inc., importer of the Djarum brand continued to offer the clove / tobacco products as small cigars in an effort to avoid the ban.

This is such bullshit, I smoke menthols too and I think the reason they avoid including them is a racial factor, over sixty percent of black smokers smoke menthols and to ban them would be seen as unfairly targetting minorities.
The ban is a complete load though, even though I hate clove cigarettes. They are also banning flavored mideast hookah tobacco, which is just sad.

The fact that it's illegal for minors to smoke is clearly not enough. As a country, we needed to do something we KNEW would prevent kids from smoking, so naturally, we took a lesson from the drug war, and made these products illegal outright. It worked with marijuana, so we KNOW it will work with smoking.
Good job, Washington! Thank God we have a government that can be counted on to always make the smart decision.

If only the Left (or what passes for the Left here) would give up on some of these 'lifestyle' nanny-state issues, we might actually be able to pass some meaningful legislation that legitimately helps average people instead of regressively raising taxes on their habits.

gotta agree with most of the sentiments here, what a load of shit. I rarely ever smoke tobacco but I really enjoyed the flavored hookah tobaccos that they sell at my local head shop..didn't think rose flavored tobacco would be very good but it was actually bomb diggity.

To anyone still interested:
Shisha is in a tough spot legally, US distributors are trying for an exemption and may get it, it is not SPECIFICALLY mentioned in the language but the language, being from the government, is very vague and Shisha could be included. Guess we'll have to see
Also happy to note my local Korean grocer will sell cloves "until they come in and make me stop"

Probably indefinitely then haha. If the cops really have nothing better to do they need to seriously rethink their priorities...

man wtf.....Ill be super mad if I can't get any shisha for my hookah. Luckily i buy it from and indian grocer, so they probably won't give a fuck.
And what of hookah bars....?
I never smoke bidis, and i just roll with unflavored swishers, but wtf? The whole line of thinking behind this is ludicrous, making it blatantly obvious that this is just a move by big tobacco companies to ease out any perceived competition. Aren't pretty much all flavored cigarettes and cloves imported?
