I need advice

Hello!
I'm new here. I've been browsing tons of forums for an idea of what to do. I was laid off from my job about 3 month ago. I've been looking for a job since then, but did not even get a single interview. I worked as a web designer for a publishing company for the last 5 years. Looks like Ya-Hooka - The Guide on the Internet is an active forum with active members and may be someone has some experience working as a freelance web designer. May be "http://www.yahooka.com/forum/cannabis-cuisine/147466-amish-friendship-bread.html#post51746 312" category is not the most appropriate for this question, but I want to try anyways to get some opinions before I go ahead with my life. I'm wondering if it is possible in the current economy to find work for a freelance web designer and make enough to pay for rent and groceries. I was able to find a small project on craigslist and I developed a website for a company. It was a small project and took me only a week to complete. I got paid $800 for 1 week of work which is not bad. Please people give me some ideas. I have 2 kids and my wife is out of work as well. Thank you in advance.

First of welcome to Yahooka, second I think you're in the wrong forum this one is dedicated to cannabis cuisine, guidance and support or inquiring minds might be a better place for ya.

And second of all I hear ya, I used to do graphics for a while, never for a company just freelancing and at times it can be hard landing a gig but it doesn't mean you should ever give up there's always work out there.Have you considered advertising in the classifieds as a freelance graphic designer in your local paper? Put some nicely designed ads (nothing to flashy but proffesional looking you can whip up in photoshop and print out at kinko's) and put it up on all the bulletin boards at your local markets and stores and malls etc...

Other then that craigslist and kijjii are great too.

you need to step up your game - web designers are going the way of the dodo. The market for that has been saturated for years, and not only that , there's tons of software out there that allows you to point and click and create a nice website without having to do any real work yourself, including all the graphics...

Instead you should start looking at web development. I would start with ASP.NET. Learn SQL Server, .NET development, etc, and you will always be able to find work if you are good at what you do (i'm a developer myself and even in the touch economy, there's still work to be found at least in my area..)

im having the same problem finding work. i worked for a newspaper as a reporter photographer, also wrote for a magazine and some websites but was laid off from all my jobs and am having a hard time freelancing to make ends meet. its rough, and im young and have no clue where to go from here.

Start up a website, get a portfolio together, get some business cards and put up posters on lamp posts, bulletin boards, etc. I'd be willing to bet you could make some decent money doing freelance work if you got your name out there. You just may have to be patient building up your client base.
