Pot use during pregnancy?

So, I come back to the forums to seek further guidance. Been here a few times before, and I haven't been dissapointed (too badly, anyways) by the turn out of supportive info I get back, I figure it would be a good idea to come back.

My wife and I are expecting twins. Grats all around, no? I'm completely excited!

However, being as we are both pretty big stoners, we are cautious of smoking the herb during her ordeal. Well, correction, she's worried.

I'm under the full belief that it isn't harmful to developing children, as a good friend of mine also smoked all the way through her pregnancy without any complications or problems and her child was born just fine, and with no side effects or medical problems.

To boot, my mother smoked throughout her pregnancy with me and my younger brother, and we're both rather outstanding individuals (in fact, he's over in Afghanistan right now, and I just got my discharge from the military not too long ago.).

Further more, I've called and talked to three doctors so far (none of which, as far as I know, are "blanket pot 'script" docs, and they all said the same thing... while they officially cannot recommend it, they don't see a whole range of problems with her doing it... i.e. it's "better than cigarettes" (which we've both kicked since finding out she was preggo) and "no where as dangerous as alcohol" (another habit kicked, or at least put on the backburner until she delivers).

We're actually going about this in a very healthy mental attitude, and we're doing well by being very, very careful about what scripts she's allowed to take and what she eats, how she works out and keeps up on walking / jogging at least once a day with me to maintain the healthy aspect of it all.

She's just a little unsure about the pot situation. I can completely understand, too, because as much as I hear and get people's input on it, I'm still a little nervous as well.

So, your thoughts and opinions? Thanks all, in advance, for your input.

Toke on, you crazy diamonds.

-St... err, umm, "Franky".

I'm under the same impression as you, I remember reading a study about a buncha Jamaican babies whose moms smoked throughout their pregnancy and they turned out fine.

One of my buddies his baby momma smoked throughout her pregnancy and the baby was beatiful and healthy.

But I just think smoking anything can't be good for you or your unburn fetus, if you must use a vaporizer, and maybe avoid eating it in case you eat too much.

imo your wife's comfortableness is top priority, so if even a shred of nagging doubt may linger with her it's probably not worth the trouble

in any case i definitely wouldn't recommend smoking. if she wants to get high, be smart and cook or vaporize. good luck and congrats!

Hot damn, thanks for the replies! I most definitely think the vaporizer idea is outstanding, reading that was like watching a lightbulb going off over both our heads!

I think the doubt only really was there because of the fact that it's being smoked, neither of us are too worried about THC affecting the kids, but the smoking part of it, yeah I think that was what was worrying us. Great idea, folks!

Thanks much!

Let me hit the other side....

Whatever goes into her body goes into their body, if she just wants to get high, then I don't think she has thought it through.

I want to make it clear, I been a smoker for 30 years and my wife for 25, I have 2 sons so this is experience talking.

My wife smoked occasionally during her first and second trimesters with my youngest son because that was the only medicine that allowed her to keep food, even water down, prescription meds did nothing or made her worse.

Theres alot of things that are 'Okay' to do while you're pregnant, but you're not giving the little ones any kind of choice in the matter, just something to think about.

just remember, your developing children are attached directly to moms blood stream. which means that any strange ferts or chemicals that could be lingering on the bud will be heated and inhaled and possibly come into contact with the developing babies.

you guys should quit smoking for nine months. like was said, vape it or eat it. its generally more healthy because there isnt smoke involved which is irritating and possibly(probably) contains some amount of carcinogenic material.

good luck and congrats on everything!

as much as i love the herb (grow it and all) i ll have to say smoking (ANYTHING) during pregnancy is a definite NO NO.

not even vaporising or eating.

cannabis is great, but the developing of the fetus is your no1 priority at this point.

a toke here and there after the birth and while she is breastfeeding i guess is "ok"

but imho not during pregnancy

you shouldnt be smokin in the house either

google cannabis use and pregnancy for the medical facts

Hats off, man. You're on your way to being a great parent already by considering things like this.

I would recommend just asking yourself a simple question, because being a parent requires THE utmost responsibility.

'What benefit will this have for my child?'

Just know that sometimes you come upon an answer that you just don't want to realize.

In this case, I haven't seen anything that suggests negative effects during development. But, why introduce something that the body doesn't require or more importantly need, to to carry out the pregnancy?

There's probably a good chance that something would show up in her blood work along the way during screening. If her history indicates that she said she didn't use marijuana and it's obvious that she has been, well, you can see where that could go.

Regardless, far out man, you're gonna be a Dad!

When I was pregnant I did everything in the best interest of my child.

So I quit all of everything right then and there cold turkey..

I she is having twins which I also have, I would say steer clear of everything except fruits and vegetables.

I was a health nut and did everything to the best of my ability to make sure that they were growing good, and thank God I did. They were born 3 months early and they were a whopping 3 lbs each which is fantastic for such an early arrival.

I say stay away from smoke, and make sure she isn't even near the second hand smoke, all smoke!

And eat lots of dark leafy greens!

Good luck on your babies!

I'm not particularly against the idea of doing this, and I have no past or current pregnancies to chalk it up to.

However--beware that ingesting any substance (no matter how benign it seems and regardless of moderation) while pregnant is an experimental and possibly risky move. There has not been research in many cases, so ask yourself if you want to take that chance.

If your girl is worried like you say, the best option is abstinence until the baby is born to cancel all doubts.

i don't agree with weed smoking mammas. the thc gets absorbed into the womb and the baby doesn't need to be exposed to that.

I'm a guy, I've never had a girlfriend pregnant so my advice isn't as useful as other peoples here. Just a fore-warning.

I would say abstain from smoking anything.

If shes going to do it anyways. Practice harm reduction. Don't use shwag/mids grown and cured with nasty fertilizers remaining in the final product. So if shes a patient at a medi-club she'd be safer off in my opinion.

Also don't smoke anything. It's just not healthy for her, and her body is going to be on over-drive during the pregnancy. Maybe cook with it, or vaporize only.

Don't have her abusing it how she would if she wasn't pregnant. Lower the frequency of use if your not going to stop it.

That's if she's going to do it anyways.

Anyways, this is a big-time for you to step up and take care of her. So if she chooses to abstain from smoking, I'm sure it would be really supportive if you at least slowed down and didn't use it infornt of her. Remember you need to support her though this, and pregnancy is no cake-walk!

Congratulations on your soon to be born twin widdle babies!

I essentially agree with what you're advising, but many people don't know where the pot they buy comes from or how it has been grown or altered if at all--so unless the OP grows or gets it from a source who does, that would be near impossible to determine.
And unfortunately...medi cal marijuana distributions only exist in very select locations. I also highly doubt the laws recognize pregnancy as a legitimate reason to qualify for medical herb.

The circumstances and precautions are quite complex if she decides to use during pregnancy and wants to be safe, but I second cooking/vaping rather than smoking.

It seems like doctors are saying "sure, you could be doing something a hell of a lot more risky like smoking or drinking" but refuse to recommend pot. Either way, I hope you either find the best possible method for administering pot if so decided and that your healthy mentalities continue

My wife tried to quit with both kids. She got a couple months on each and needed a little something to help her get along with the days. Turns out, the two months off dropped her tolerance to that of a 12 year old, and she was able to get blitzed on two or three 1/2 hits of some really potent stuff I had, Super Star, I believe. She'd toke 2-4 times a week, inhaling maybe a 1/2 gram a week.

As a serious stoner, your lady needs to get her tolerance WAY DOWN before going on smoking jags while pregnant. We heavies need quite a lot to reach a buzz, but it doesn't take more than a month to make you like a new stoner again.

Congrats!!!

like turm said, twins are usually born earlier or slightly premature and many times are underweight, since two fetuses share the belly.

they have an underdeveloped digestive system and usually experience jaundice for prolonged periods and reflux.

As a parent i can tell ya that having a baby with reflux can be very frustrating and stresfull.

Having one baby is alot of work (at least if u try to do it properly). I cant imagine with two at once..the stress factor must hit the roof.

Babies of smokers (either pot or ciggies) usually are born underweight.

THC is a powerfull substance. It might be a soft drug, but it still a psychedelic.

And dont get me wrong, i aint an anti-cannabis person. I grow it and i even started to right a book about it. But when it comes to using it during pregnancy or nursing, then you ll find me on the opposite side.

Your wife should get plenty of rest now that she can, because when your little angels are born, you both will be quite busy.

She should eat good (nutritional) food, no hot stuff (cayenne peppers and such), no alcohol and be as calm as possible. Babies (either in the woumb or out) "feel" you. They know when your stressed. so try to avoid arguments or tense situations. If u can, play calming music to her.

You dont have to change your life while your pregnant. Just watch out for certain things.

Avoid second hand smoke. Do all the necessary tests (ultra-sounds, blood tests, B-level ultrasounds, etc) during the pregnancy.

Avoid pharmaceuticals and especially antibiotics (during the pregnancy) and especially in the first 3 months. Paracetamol in the only accepted painkiller for headaches and such.

she might be feeling a little sicky sometimes during the pregnancy or avoiding foods that she used to love (or the opposite). At the last months she might be getting heartburn and a bit of reflux as her big belly is pushing her intestines and stomach acid "comes up" again. Malox helps.

She also might experience mood changes. Crying for no apparent reasons (watching a chick movie or such). Its normal.

Dont get "scared" by all the above. Its normal procedure.

If u can, be there for her during labor. Its one of the greatest experiences ever. Massage her back, support her, etc.

The real work starts as soon as you take the babies home

Congratulations. A whole new chapter has opened in your life.

I ve been working 16 hr days for the last 2 years. Wake up at 6:30, prepare breakfast for the family, go to work, come back (no rest) and continue until 10pm non stop. The work doesnt stop in the house.

Sometimes i think i ll go mad. The stress works its way on me. But when a child smiles to you, all the exhaustion seems not to matter.

are you ready for the roller-coaster?

sorry for the long post, but i think you need to know these essentials.

as for the topic, dont let her use herb while shes pregnant man.

EDIT: after birth, your wife will need all the help she can get. Dishes will be piling up, bathrooms will need cleaning, laundry will need to be done quite often, etc. It also might get tense between the two of you since you wont be getting enough sleep.

It helps to take things with a "pinch of salt". sometimes we can do it, sometimes not so easy..

Before kids, i used to come back from work, eat, sit on the couch to watch tv, vaporise herb and be like...man i m bored as f***. Its so boring having nothing to do...

i guess life heard me and eversince (2 years ago) i havent got any rest..

We (men) dont have a clue of the amount of work a mother has. Its huge man. If u dont help her, she will eventually crash.

oh yeah, one more thing. Not all children are the same. You first child might be a sleeper, and the 2nd to wake up 3-4 times a night (or the opposite).

Marijuana helps me to go the extra mile sometimes, when i dont have the mental or physical energy to do things.

thnaks for listening to my venting yall
