Grow and be merry!

Right now I have the babies set up in trays each with their own pot on a specially designed table. The current lighting in their vegetative state is 2 48" warm fluoros, 2 48" cool fluoros and a 24" plant/aquarium light all about 2 inches above the ladies. They are already 5" tall and are starting to get bushy I will be posting more as they progress. A couple of the seeds are trainwreck, a couple kush, and the haze will be getting here soon enough to start. I'll be posting more I hope everyone will stick with me through this first grow I'll be back with pics and await your guidance

Here's a few days ago sorry for the bad pic

Welcome.

Any pics are better than no pics!

What soil you using?

You`re right to keep the lights close to the seedlings, if they don`t get enough light they`ll stretch. 24" sounds more suitable than the 48"ers but you can only work with what you`ve got. What will you be using for the flowering stage?

Best advice I can give if it`s your first grow is don`t over water. Keep the soil moist but not sodden, it looks a bit wet in the pic (although that might be `cos you`ve just watered them).

The soil used is miracle grow moisture control.

As for the watering, I wait until the tops of the soil are crusty which takes awhile with the aforementioned soil (yes, I had just watered my babies).

It is surrounded by a cardboard frame with aluminum foil attached with spray adhesive. I'm looking to to procuring some mylar seeing as though aluminum foil is not terribly reflective. There is a basin of water that I have placed in front of a 10" circular fan to keep the humidity right as well as circulating air through out.

I have pH up and down for my tap water. Should I invest in some distilled water to get away from all of the chemicals and metals in tap water?

For flowering I will be investing in a 400w HPS as well as experimenting with red LED's in conjunction with the HID light hopefully it will yield a bit more *crosses fingers*

Good that you`re not over watering, if you did then this would stop oxygen getting to the roots, this is important.

Aluminium foil is just as reflective as mylar, the benefit of mylar is that it spreads the light out whereas tinfoil can cause hotspots where the light is focused in certain areas- this can burn the plants. You will probably be fine with the flouros but when you set the 400W sodium up either get mylar or just use matt white paint or white sheeting.

Be a little wary of the nutrients which come with this compost- you`d be better getting some organic soil from a hydroponics shop if you can, the cost isn`t much more, the nutes in Miracle grow and the like can be a little harsh for weed plants, can end up locking up the necessary elements so your plants can`t use them.
I dunno whereabouts you are, here in the UK you can get Plagron, Canna or Biobizz (and many other similar) products which are great. If you only increase yield by say 25% you`ll more than have made your outlay. Or to save bucks there are plenty of experienced growers here who`ll be happy to hit you up with a great soil recipe if you ask them nicely.

Sounds like you are controlling the PH of your water. Great. This was the major hurdle I had to get over on my first grows- I didn`t understand how important PH was. Get a bucket full of water, stand it for 24hrs or something to let the chlorine evaporate then PH balance it. 7- 6.5 is ideal for soil. Distilled or spring water would be ideal but this is not essential as long as you`re controlling the PH.

It`s up to you but I wouldn`t worry about the LEDs on your first grows. Experiment with tried and tested methods and get a good system then you`ll be ready to mess around with new fangled stuff. That`s only my opinion of course.

initial growth looks good.. soil is probably a bit hot, but it'll be fine for the big girls.

farmerG has it right.. overwatering is your #1 enemy.

^especially with moisture control built in to the soil.

an echo; alfoil should be fine while cfl, but switch when you get the hid.

thanks for posting your grow; we'll keep watching, try stopping us

WOOOOOOOOOOOO!

My haze seeds got here! I've got them germinating in peat pots at the moment. no pics of it seeing as it's kinda boring.

This picture is one day's growth from the other picture, they're looking good I think

I'm so excited for my little haze babies to take hold and join the rest of my ladies.

Thank you all for your input thus far, I'm glad I have a few people on my side who know what they're doing!

Could the mods move this to Canna-Blogs?

what was the original nutrient content of the soil? and what nutes are you planning on using for the rest of their lives? a lot of people make the mistake of using miracle grow and fertilizers, which often has horrible results. are you only using it for the seedlings and then gonna transfer into organic? im sorry about all the questions, but as soon as i saw the strains your using, i drueled a little on my keyboard.

as for foil... foil actually reflects light worse than a plain, flat white wall. the creases and folds in it send light in directions it should not be going, so id either invest in mylar or flat white paint.

definately go buy a 5 gallon water bottle and keep it filled with REVERSE OSMOSIS water and your plants will love you for it. on soil after a few waterings, youll notice a mineral buildup on the top of the soil, which if not kept in check could make your soil ph toxic. not to mention all the dissolved solids in tap water which will affect how well your plants are able to uptake and absorb nutrients!!!

and about the led's, i dont know either way. the jury's still out on those. but in my opinion, they offer very poor penetration below 5" even in the new panel style lights. the hps should be a red enough spectrum to encourage gnarly budding, but its worth a shot... as long as its fairly priced i guess...

id love to see some more pics when you get a chance... trainwreck is one of my alltime fav strains

here's a new pic, not too much activity

Getting organic soil with nutes from technaflora. Hydroponic nutrients should work for soil, correct?

Growth looks 'ok' but is slightly stunted on account of small pots, and quite likely the soil drying out too much between waterings.

If possible transplant to larger pots immediatly or when practicle.

Hydro nutrients will work just fine for soil. But why not use organic nutrients especially since you will be growing in soil.

Help!!! What is causing these little spots on my babies. I did a little research and I'm thinking that its a phosphorus deficiency. I have some fertilizer to correct this problem but i'd like some input as well

Shit you should shrink the pictures dude. I can't get a good look at em. They look like they are in great quality, so you should shrink the picture somewhat.
