Seems a pretty obvious metaphor for the 12 signs of the zodiac around the central sun.
Or, if you want to get christian, 12 apostles and the Son.
Either way, 12 symbols around a central symbol is an extremely common geometric pattern. I'm not surprised masons have that in their houses or temples or whatever.

perhaps not the best example to dispel conspiracy theories LOL, but 12 rays around the central axis (the 4 larger rays from the center) is the same basic symbology.
