Why do stars

Anyone know how to explain why stars expand and blow up? I mean stars don't take in any energy and space is frictionless/gravityless. How does a star even hold shape or burn?

Or is this similiar to asking is god real?

Stars are held together by their own forces of gravity. They are fueled by hydrogen thermonuclear fusion at their core. A star expands when it's core runs out of fuel at it's core and the hydrogen atomic explosions aren't happening anymore... therefore the core collapses. This really makes the core heat up because of the pressure... the outer layer expands from the heat. The star becomes less dense until the helium that is still burning runs out and the star collapes into a white dwarf.

At least that's my super basic understanding.

Haha awesome! I just never would have pictured it. Usually when I am thinking of things running out of energy I think of them just going out of flame you know. But that makes more sense! I guess a star isn't really like a match. haha

How a star evolves and dies depends on its mass, not all stars blow up when they reach the end of their life.

Low and medium mass stars die quietly as they burn up their nuclear fuel... the most violent part of this process is the ejection of their surface layer in the form of a planetary nebulae which leaves behind a white dwarf star.

Massive stars die much more violently in the form of supernovae...and depending on the mass of that star, after the supernova occurs they either become neutron stars or black holes.

The reason for the violent explosion of a supernova is best understood through learning a little bit about nucleo-synthesis and atomic binding energies associated with the life of a star.

Here's a link as Carl Sagan, stoner scientist extraordinarie explains it...

Very well explained by Jake and of course, Hedons.
