Ubuntu

Can someone explain it to me? The Wikipedia page doesn't make much sense.

You can request the Ubuntu OS CD's online, for free, I did a while back and they sent me three of them $0.

I havent really tried to do much with it, ive installed it on my computer, but nothing I had was compatible with it, I think ill give it another shot on my old pc.

Ubuntu is a version of the Linux operating system. Other variations include Yellow Dog, Red Hat Fedora, Damn Small Linux, etc. Some versions of Linux like Red Hat you have to pay for because they provide tech support, whereas Ubuntu is pretty much you on your own to search/fix whatever problems occur. Well, not entirely as there are forums and crap, but it's not as easy as dialing a number. Mostly all developers make their older versions free when a new one is released though.

Ubuntu is a popular version because its graphical user interface resembles windows/macs, but to access all the features and be able to configure it quickly you will need to know some Linux command line. Usually you can just download the iso/installer off the site if don't want to wait for CD's.

I put Yellow Dog on my PS3 a few months back. Torrented the latest pay version and after a little tricky install it was up and running. Pretty much became a glorified web browser/multimedia player for my tv, which I could already stream to from my computer anyway. Could have turned it into a small web server, but I don't want to leave my PS3 running 24/7.

If you aren't hosting anything and want full functionality/compatibility with whatever programs you have now that's free, I suggest trying out Windows 7.

I know what the OS is. I thought putting this in Higher Thoughts would lead people to realize

I'm talking about the philosophy that originated in Africa.

Not the computer OS, of who's thread would be put in Multimedia and Technology.

Well since you seem to know what direction you'd like to take the conversation a little more info than there's nothing on wikipedia would help in the original post.

But i'd wager to guess that not many people are too familiar with it.

Ubuntu is an ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other. The word has its origin in the Bantu languages of Southern Africa. Ubuntu is seen as a classical African concept.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(philosophy)

I actually stumbled on this while checking up on Kubuntu and KDE.

Quote:
The "Ubuntu" distribution of the Linux computer operating system is inspired by the concept, based on the premise that it "brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world."
But I'm like... what IS the "spirit of Ubuntu"?

Seems to be the 'no man is an island' concept. Everyone is a collaboration of memories/relationships of other people.

Almost like a spiritual Facebook.

I apologize for not using wikipedia and going for what the majority of us would associate the word Ubuntu with.

Ubuntu sounds like the virgin pussy of a Zulu Princess. "I have come back from the hunt victorious! Now, I claim the ancient right of Ubuntu!!!"

Haha pretty much.

It's so self explanatory.

But seriously, I do like it as a concept. It's like Philosophical Socialism.

ubuntu, its meaning translated, is something like "i am because you are" or something. i read a little bit about it in a book called peace by david cortright, or it might have been something by lederach or something. it's a big peace philosophy concept, in addition to being a humanist adage.
