UFO sightings spark alien invasion fears

Alarmed UK citizens convinced they saw an armada of UFOs in the sky have flooded radio stations with their calls of distress.

Hundreds of people witnessed strange orange orbs hover over Liverpool, north England, on Monday, British tabloid The Sun reports.

The sightings prompted widespread speculation about the possiblity of an alien invasion.

Former policeman Steve Rafferty, 50, and his daughter Emma, convinced they were having a close encounter, filmed the unexplained phenomena on a mobile phone.

Another witness suggested the "alien craft" appeared to be scouting for a place to land, the newspaper reported.

The sightings came as three soldiers reported seeing UFOs spinning over an army base in Shropshire, in the west of the country.

The 13 flying objects were captured on film and are now reportedly being investigated by army officials.

Another crop circle has appeared in the English countryside — and this one's clearly been made by someone, or something, that understands math.

At first glance, the strange ratcheted pattern, radiating out clockwise, doesn't look like much — modern art, perhaps.

But an electrical engineer from North Carolina — described by the London newspapers as a "retired astrophysicist" — figured out that it was an abstract representation of pi, the number at the center of Euclidean geometry.

The circle, one of hundreds that have sprung up overnight in the English countryside over the past two decades, appeared in early June near Wroughton, Wiltshire, just south of Swindon and about 80 miles west of London.

It's about half a mile from Barbury Castle, a pre-Roman fortress surrounded by long hillocks that may be the remnants of Iron Age buildings or burial mounds.

On Aug. 4, 1977, Paul Shishis was just a regular teenager working at a Scarborough grocery store.

But, it was no ordinary evening shift. He remembers that day well.

That Thursday night, he said, out in an adjacent open field, the 18-year-old saw what most people encounter only in science-fiction movies: a pear-shaped unidentified flying object with rotating multi-coloured lights in the night sky.

"I was dumbstruck with what I was witnessing," Mr. Shishis said, now 48 and living in Oshawa.

Mr. Shishis' experience is recorded alongside thousands of Canadian sightings, and the recent recounting of his story comes at a time when many continue to pose the elusive age-old question: Are we alone in the universe? This year marks the 60th anniversary of the crash landing in Roswell, New Mexico, where some believe the U.S. military covered up evidence of an alien craft. And this weekend, Edmonton's TELUS World of Science, a respected museum complex, hosted a two-day UFO conference exploring the possibility of intelligent alien life.

For some, the possibility of alien beings visiting Earth is hard to swallow, the stuff of science fiction along the lines of the X-Files and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

But one independent Canadian UFO investigator said mysterious sightings in Ontario appear to be on the rise, with this year potentially seeing record numbers.

Brian Vike, who runs HBCC UFO Research from Houston, B.C, records Canadian incidents with the help of a British website.

They reported about 150 Ontario sightings so far this year up to the end of August out of a rough total of 300 in Canada.

Compare that with 188 Ontario sightings in all of 2006, according to another count that also includes Mr. Vike's numbers, the Canadian UFO Survey, and the results could be surprising, he said.

"You're going to have a record-breaking year, no doubt about it," he said.

The Canadian UFO Survey is tabled by leading UFOlogists Chris Rutkowski, who spoke at the Edmonton conference, and Geoff Dittman, perhaps providing the clearest snapshot of Canadian sightings.

B.C. used to be the UFO magnet of Canada. According to last year's survey, B.C. beat Ontario in sightings despite having a smaller population.

In 2002, B.C. logged 176 sightings. Ontario had 128. And the next year, it was even more lopsided: 304 to 150.

But, so far his year, up to the end of August, B.C. only has half of Ontario's numbers, at 81 sightings, according to Mr. Vike.

Mr. Vike said he's at a loss to explain it. He said several sightings were spotted near the Pickering nuclear plant. (Uranium hungry UFO'S)

"Is it something that's attracting them? (I'd say yes) Is it something like the great bodies of water that you have?" After all, Mr. Shishis said he saw the UFO hover over what he believed to be Pickering that August night.

Ottawa is tied in eighth place in the number of municipal sightings with Edmonton and Burnaby, 12, according to the 2006 survey.

The No. 1 municipality attracting UFOs? Maidstone, Sask.

Whatever the reason for higher Ontario numbers, many experts say that Canada lacks a centralized database for sightings.

I believe in extra terrestrial beings(we can't be the only thing in a boundless universe that can think and build). Though crop circles aren't anything serious, and your first source of information was a "british tabloid". I don't know how the ones are in the UK but the ones in the US are bogus.

They get abducted, the lady asked the leader where the came from.
He points to a star chart.
Years later, she draws the chart during hypnosis.
Years later, the drawing matches newly discovered stars.

The famous picture of the airforce guy holding the aluminum weather ballon on his office floor,
can be enlarged several times to read what is on the paper he's holding.

There was some sort of flock with several witness but it was at night in stephensville.
They were moving at unearthly speed.
Damnit why does texas have to be so big!
It might as well have happened in England.

The one's I hear more of are Mexico's los "OVNI" weaving in and out of military helicopters
during the '93 Mexican Independace Day parade formations.

There was one in Laredo in 2003 witness by 12 mexian federal officers and chased by 2 american fighter planes.

That Mel Gibson documentary is pretty good too.

i heard bout this shit in some bay in eastern Canada happend in the 50's or 60's or something. was on the cover of the paper for a little bit all over canada around the time that it happened. cant think of the name of the event right

I was watching some show on UFO's and they talked about astronauts and how UFO's aren't too uncommon, but it was something that was really taboo to talk about.

One astronaut spoke up and supposedly was fired not long after it.

That's not the show I saw, but it's pretty much the same thing.
