The nomenclature has changed! When I was a kid the roach was as you say the un-smoked tip of the joint. We’d smoke’m as far down as we could and use a “roach clip” so we could burn them down as far as we could. What would not burn, the “roach” were often saved and re-cycled and re-rolled into a new foul-smoking joint.
But the days of the roach-clip are long gone. By using a piece of cardboard in the tip the joint can be smoked to the very end. There is no waste. If I’m rolling for myself I make them long, taking up as much as half the joint. After all, half the point of rolling with a roach is eliminating waste.

Heh, I've never ripped up a pack of papers. We usually tear a small piece off of a matchbook.
If the joint in question is accompanying me on an outdoor trip, filters are useful.
If I'm chilling with friends at the house, passing around a j, then whomever gets stuck with the roach just loads it in the bong and finishes it off.
The obfuscation of these terms is a bit disconcerting... reminds me of those brits that refer to hash as "resin"

Some people are more obsessive about it than others.
How to make an 8th Generation Joint.
"To make a first Generation joint, you and/or friends of yours smoke five joints down to roach size (If you are not familiar with the term 'roach', you probably shouldn't be here but it means the very last nub of the joint that is basicly too small to smoke without a 'roach clip'). unroll the leftovers from your five roaches into one new joint. You have now created one 1st Generation Joint. From here the process continues into the next Generations in the same manner. To make a second Generation Joint takes five first Generation Joints smoked down to roaches again and then unrolled into the new 2nd Generation Joint..."
1st Gen = 5 joints
2nd Gen = 25 joints
3rd Gen = 125 joints
4th Gen = 625 joints
5th Gen = 3125 joints
6th Gen = 15625 joints
7th Gen = 78125 joints
8th Gen = 390625 joints
and so on...

Or just mix up your second gen w/ your first gen or w/e
that way they dont get too fowl and covered with so much resin you can't pull air through

Also the best way to smoke a roach is to put it in the shotgun(carb) of the pipe(not bong), then using the bowl like a shotgun.
Hits amazingly.

I always referred to a piece of cardboard as a filter as a Crutch. Roach is what the others have been saying. That said I had a friend who made at least a 2nd gen joint but I never hit it.

Meh, in my circle of friends they're just a roach or a roach tip. We call the end of the joint a roach too if we haven't used a tip for it. Never heard crutch be used before though. Oh well, I usually use one. I find it takes a little more time but the joint comes out a lot neater. I've even used them in a few blunts if I haven't had enough to pack it tightly. I find if you don't roll the cardboard tight enough the smoke hits pretty rough though.

I guess I'll add my opinion too.
Filter/ mouthpiece: Small rolled posterboard/cardboardish cylinder in end of joint. I find that it helps me roll by giving me somethin solid to shape the rest of it around. Also you can smoke all your weed. Also if done properly it won't collapse or shut itself from saliva, it's a lot more like smoking a cigarette. You can actually pressure your lips around it to draw in smoke, with just papes it seems like you pinch it shut when you try to do this. I prefer this method, but will smoke any kind.
Roach: Leftover resin soaked paper + tiny bit of weed. You can save these and throw em in a bowl. I also find that putting it in the end of a one hitter (batty) usually lets you smoke it all. As far as rollin it into another joint (or that crazy 8th gen deal), I can't help but imagine that gets pretty gross pretty quick while not adding a lot to the experience.
But seriously, could they not have just rolled a real 3rd or 4th gen joint? That would actually be neat to see, but why do they think 8 gens is impressive when it is pretty impossible? Sorry to get hung up here, but was there a point in doing the math past what's feasible and then making that the benchmark? Ever had a 8th gen joint? If only a few people have ever done a 2nd gen, why speculate. I dunno...
So yeah I do a mouthpiece/filter in my joints (few and far b/w) but have no problem with any kind of doobie.
 Smoke it
