..And so my family's cookie house tradition continues... Sorta

This year the kids and I decided we would make our very first Nestle
Tollhouse cookie house (without parental aid on my part)..

I was so excited! We had bags of candy and pounds of chocolate chips ready
and waiting for days!

We invited some friends over and I spent the morning baking cookie sheet after cookie sheet of house parts.

A few little beginner "mishaps" (our house had two doors and the roof was
just slighty short, but what can ya do..?) and we were set to
decorate!

The house was a little crooked as we put it all together with toothpicks
and frosting glue. 5 eager little faces sat around the table as we
assembled it, just waiting to decorate and then eat this masterpiece.

It was beautiful. Fit for a sugar plum fairy herself, with it's
multicolored ribbon candy shutters and peppermint patty walkway. We even
gave it a chimney and some tootsie roll fire wood.

*insert intro to the tragic ending music here*

Then it reeallly started to lean... Overhangs began to crack and walls
began to cave inward.

Our sugar coated structure stood a total of 74 minutes before it's
collapse, which was quickly followed by a small pack of vultures swooping
in to devour the remains.

It was a fabulously fun time and I just want to thank my mom and dad for
handing me this family tradition to share with my children.

Maybe next year the house will stay standing a bit longer...

One fairly large gingerbread house...

$5

One illegal firework...

$5

Cheers from the neighbor kids as the house is blown to smithereens...

Priceless.

We usually wait until New Years, there will be video this year, I can hardly wait!

It was a monumental task. Of that I was sure, having watched my mother struggle with the roof issues as a child.

Maybe it's just the way I remember it, maybe it's because she made 5 or 6 houses every year for all the childhood christmas' that I can remember, but my mothers always turned out so lovely.

Next year use 5/8" lag bolts and 3' zinc coated screws. Guaranteed to stand up for 100 years!

Just don't chip a tooth or anything in the eating process.

BTW, Merry Christmas, my dear.

Next time use shortening instead, you'll have a stiffer cookie thats much easier to build with, you want to roll out the dough thinner as well.

Thats why they make gingerbread houses, its a much denser dough and is baked longer to give it some rigidity.

That looks like a damned tasty disaster area you got goin' on though.

SHORTENING! Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna try it next year.

And I know that gingerbread is easier to work with, but ease of building is DEFINITELY not top consideration here... This is all about the eating!!!

Who wouldn't agree that chocolate chip cookie houses > gingerbread houses?

Am I right? I'm right, right? You know I'm right...

When you're right you're right. Those are some great pics Loops. That last one made me laugh.

I for one, though, think that El Fudges with their built in caulking material are the way to go.
