^That works well...in theory. The problem is that in reality, after living together for a while, most couples will want to procreate. Kids are much harder to get rid of than marriage so if you're gonna go as far as having a child bind the two of you together, you might as well get married.

I have been on both sides of that issue. Now I really do agree with the whole premise of it. I got with someone who makes me want to be with him 4-EVER!! and he feels the same. Lived together for years, had a child, one (by myself prior to..), and then after baby was several years old,we did the DO. My youngest was my flower girl, and my oldest was one of his best men. Its been great eversince, minus the usual shee-it, like bills and illness, etc.

I think marraige is unnecissary these days. Everyone just gets divorced anyways. 50 years ago you met someone and they said thier parents were divorced and BAM out comes the surprised open mouth stare. Today the open mouthed surprised stare happens when someone says thier parents are still together.
but im not one that wants or sees the need to get married. i dont even really believe in a significant other...

I think it's very interesting that those who have posted against marriage in this thread have never been married, and those who are pro-marriage are in happy/healthy married relationships.
I'm married, have been for almost five years. Next month will be 8 years together. I love my wife to no end, she's my partner, my companion, my best friend and my lover. SHe's the mother of my child and the main breadwinner in our house. She supported me in my quest to get my college degree and i don't think I would have achieved that if it hadn't been for her (it wasn't that I'm not smart enough, my work ethic and drive to succeed are practically non-existent). As for the wedding itself, it was one of the coolest days in my life! There's NOTHING wrong with celebrating a union between two people, and in my wife's family it's pretty much mandatory. The first year we visited her mother, despite the fact that we were moving in together (and living in sin) we had to sleep in separate bedrooms because we weren't married. My wife's siblings were all married before we were, and it's important for family members to not feel left out in something (bad enough my wife's family is all in the LDS church - and we're NOT obviously). One important thing that anti-marriage people forget is that when you get married, you get STUFF! We got a ton of money and presents at our wedding! If you're just starting out, it's great because all of the sudden you have a stocked kitchen! Our honeymoon was a week long cruise on the Star Princess, and it was the BEST week of my life. Being single is great for awhile, but mankind is a social animal and needs companionship just like most of the other mammals in the world. Why deny our nature? |
