wellfleation,
if your mac is so great, lets see what you can do with it. I see you have Photoshop cs3 on that POS Mac of yours, lets see what you got. (and I don't mean editing photographs)

Fuck windows indeed, get a Macbook (pro or regular). If you aren't a PC gamer, then you probably won't miss xp or vista very much. I sure don't. |

I've used as a mac at college to design as well as a PC, I change it up every week to make sure I can work well on a mac in case I ever have a job where I need to. I find the PC to be more convenient especially when it comes to Internet use and especially with updating my websites using FTP (in IE)
I find it funny that so many graphic designers at my school swear the mac is so much better, yet their graphics suck. a PC will run all the same programs as a mac, yes their is a few that the mac will only run but the opposite is also true. You say macs are so much better, show me why.. show me something you can do on a mac that I can't do on a PC

Mac's are just overpriced fashion accessories, everyone knows the only reason you're paying alot more is just because they look smarter. I'm starting to think the only reason people buy them is so they can brag to their friends and/or post pictures online to gloat about.

Is that why PC magazine, a magazine that is obviously PC centric, consistently picks Macs over PCs. The above is just one of many examples.

Dr. Shindig, it's not a case of better vs worse, its about what you want in a computer. While it is a little difficult for me to compare from personal experiences, since the processor/memory in my Mac is alot more powerful than my previous Dell Inspiron (500m I think), OSX does seem to run significantly smoother than most Windows machines I have used. When I first made the switch (from Windows to Mac), I thought it was going to be tedious and frustrating. I was wrong, while I hate using the word 'intuitive', it really is the best adjective to describe it. With Windows, this is not the case. For people who don't want to spend their days removing ad-ware and spy-ware from their hard drives, OSX also holds a significant edge. I realize that advanced users know how to avoid such things, but a vast majority of Windows users do at one point get some malicious shit installed on their computer without their knowledge. I have yet to encounter one questionable application or task running on my computer in the 9 or 10 months of use. There are many other smaller things which help make OSX better than Windows, and now with the Intel chip, more and more games are getting released cross-platform (Starcraft 2 and Spore are some examples that I'm interested in picking up/downloading). Overall, I just find it an easier computer to use, manage, and maintain. I play games on my PS3 - so that isn't even an issue for me. While it may take a little longer to find applications (such as for FTP uploading, which I guarantee there is a Mac app that rivals IE's uploader), they are usually free and if not, easily crack-able. Anyways, I hope this started to answer your question. Obviously you have experience using Macs so I don't know how useful this is, but I felt like contributing my experiences to this thread. As for something that Mac can do that a PC can't, I don't think there is anything. But I challenge you to find anything a PC can do that I couldn't do on my Mac (which doesn't involve gaming). how about upgrades (talk about expensive). when you buy a mac, you get what you get and thats about it. i like to use all operating systems including the shitty one that 99% of people use because more then likely ill be on a machine like that and if your computer savvy microsoft is just as good as mac. what the hell kind of computing are you doing that makes osx so much better. everyone brings up the photoshop/movie making and game fps but i seriously doubt your into either of those. just dont take computers so personal. do you think someone that uses vista/xp is inferior to a mac user? ![]() ![]() not much difference there...

even with photoshop, PC/windows handles photoshop just fine, never had any problems. Illustrator, photoshop and dreamweaver cs3 run nice and smooth on my dual core with vista.
and honestly, I have never had the blue screen error on this computer in the 7 months I've had it. Really the only annoying thing about vista is it's attempt at security, which annoys the shit out of me with all the warning pop ups.

OSX vs Windows:
Exposé is one great feature that windows doesn't have (or maybe vista implemented something similar, last I've used is XP). Um... (yeah, I know one feature, pretty weak argument, right?) You know you're totally right about Adobe, shindig. I've said the same thing myself. You can do the same design on a mac as you can on a PC. I don't even really get frustrated by Windows. All I can tell you is I get burnt out less working on a Mac than on Windows. I love the dock (though I do command+tab switching more). I like the menu bar on top and thinner, I find it less obtrusive. In general it looks nicer, and yeah, that's worth paying for for something I look at 8+ hours a day. I've never really had problems getting things to work on Mac or Windows. They're both fine. But I've wasted more time trying to get things to work on windows then on mac. Sharing, networking and things like that also seem to be easier on macs. It's not really a question of 'can it do it?' Because both platforms work fine. Really. It's not just a fashion accessory though. It actually makes doing things easier. The whole way folders are displayed I like better. I like the preview feature in finder (hit spacebar on an image, video, text, pdf, audio file and a lightbox of sorts appears with a preview of that file) Included applications are nicer. Better designed, easier to use. blah blah blah blah, computer are cool

Long time Windows users don't feel like they want to learn something new, and long time Mac users don't understand why Big Blue lovers won't switch. But to each their own. I love my Macbook. I loved my iBook G4, I loved my Mac SE. I couldn't stand any of the PCs that were given to me or my wife. When I"ve purchased a computer I've bought Apple, plain and simple. What really amuses me is that the topic starter asked a specific question about specific computer uses, and the thread has become an argument over which is better Mac or PC. Funny. |

wow so to sum up this thread : The definition of neat or good features for Mac users is glitzy but useless eye candy. Exposé is a great example of useless.
