Garmin or TomTom?

hey guys i want to pick up a gps for the car since they seem to be coming down somewhat in price. does anyone have one? I plan to spend somewhere between 150-200 so obviously im not looking for anything top of the line. I would like the speech turn navigation shit. also do you pay a subscription for the service or will it always be able to access gps info?

There aren't any subscription fees from the GPS's I've seen.

No experience with TomToms, but my friend's Garmin is badass. Very quick and pretty sleek design.

I've also used a Magellan, and didn't like it. It had difficulties connecting to the satellite at times, and also seemed to lag.

i've got a tomtom, and its awesome. easy to put in and save destinations, like 7 free voices come with it, and it works right out of the box. I dunno if I've used a garmin before, but I've used other systems and tomtom's superior

My mom has a TomTom, it's badass... my friend Carl has a Garmin and it's badass as well...
from my little experience with the Garmin(I've used it once) it's a little harder to navigate(through the menus, that is) than the TomTom

ive got a garmin and the only bad thing about it is when youre typing in a postcode letters and numbers arent on the same touchscreen keyboard you have to switch between them
other than that its spot on, it does more than the tomtom of the same price

Garmin are the bigger company iirc, who do a lot more navigation stuff outside of domestic satnav unit's, so i'd go for them. Although the best TT/Garmin unit's tend to start at about £170 over here, i'd assume it's cheaper in the US though.

Navigon ftw.

I like my Garmin, when I have a need to use it.

I have (rather my parents have, and I use on loan from them because I bought it) Magellan. I like it a bit, but the maps seem to be a bit old which often gets me in to trouble in the newer parts of the town because roads don't exist or are listed wrong. I need to update the maps frequently but other than that I'm really satisfied with it. As long as it's on mute, because the thing talking to you is downright obnoxious.

It's called a map. It's printed on paper. Learn to read one, and then you won't have to waste your money on things you don't need.

Because reading a map, in the dark at night, whilst driving a car is way easier.

holy shit nun. I'm in agreement with you about something! Fuck maps. Srsly. Especially maps at night.

When I was on tour, our van had a tomtom. It worked really well. If you go to a best buy or something, you can probably try out different models and see which one you like the most before you buy it.

the "cheap"(general civilian model) gps units we have at work are garmin and they are pretty decent. I have no experience using the other brand though but cheap garmin ones are good enough that we can use it for general survey use on contruction sites.

my mom has a tomtom and has worked well for what we have used it for. but we took it to new york and on the way to the jfk airport from Elizabeth, it was calculating like over one million roads and couldn't even tell us how to get there until we got on the verrazano bridge, which by then we knew how to get there anyway. other than that debocle tho, it has worked great.

I bought a brand new Garmin for $145. It fits in the palm of my hand.
I like it a lot. Worked right out of the box. It is portable too if you want to use it on a bike, I don't know how long the battery lasts but it might be better than nothing.
I drove from El Paso to Kansas to Chicago with it. Got there with 0 problems.
Probably one of the best investments I've made in awhile.
