Hit Random and Rate 5 Songs Thread

So being as most of us listen to music while we are browsing the forums..I thought it would be cool to rehash an idea I stole from another forum...Hit random/shuffle on your comp or ipod/mp3 device and rate the next five songs...

1. Queens of The Stone Age - I Never Came (6/10, A rare mid-tempo song for them...A light mellow number that passes as quickly as it comes, nothing really stands out but it is a solid song)

2. Devin the Dude - Boom 1 (2/10, Funny Interlude but no music)

3. DJ Shadow - Mashin' On The Motorway (7/10, great song, would fit right in on a getaway mix, great use of ambient noise, voice recordings, and organic and synthesized music)

4. Kalyanji Anandji - My Guru (7/10, I love the sitar and this song is full of em, the dated effect on the recoding at the beginning is a nice touch, and the mix of mid-east and modern drum/bass is quite pleasing to the ear, great song for a stoned mix, get baked, float away)

5. Wolfmother - Mind's Eye (6/10, I have never heard this song before, it has a nice start to it, it has a real mellow ballad feel, good rainy day lyrics and some strong vocals into the chorus, great chorus and bridge. It opens up into almost a Whoish organ workout...This one is a good one for the downtimes)

1. Pink Floyd-Pigs (Three Different Ones) - (6/10) From the album "Animals". More like a scherzo from a larger piece than a song because like most Pink Floyd albums it is meant to be listened to from beginning to end. Not my favorite song from the album but still good.

2.The Lovin' Spoonful-Summer in the City - (5/10) Good classic rock song from the sixties, probably familiar to most people, especially the keyboard part. Used in a Gatorade commercial. Very catchy and upbeat.

3.The Doors-Lament - (7/10) From the album An American Prayer which was released years after Morrison's death. The album is Morrison's poetry with the Doors playing music to it. The poem/song is about Morrison's cock. "Lament for my cock, sore and crucified". Really nice relaxing music to accompany it. Before you go assuming that a poem about your penis is automatically gay, I think most guys can relate with the sentiments expressed. "Guitar player, ancient wise satyr, sing your ode to my cock". "Death old friend, death and my cock are the world." A great example of the poetic Morrison at his best.

4.Soundgarden-Spoonman - (7/10) Great song by Soundgarden, obviously refering to the spoon used to melt heroin. Love the guitar riffs and especially the line "All my friends are skeletons, they beat the rhythym with their bones". Nice and heavy.

5.Elton John-Daniel - (7/10) I'm actually glad I did this because I haven't heard this song in a while. Slow, very sad, melodical song about missing your brother. Simple but meaningful lyrics. I'd like to include a little bit.."Daniel my brother you are older than me, do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal? Your eyes have died but you see more than I, Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky". That lyric definetely leads me to believe that the song was written about an older brother's drug usage and rambling. Makes me think of how my little bro must feel about me sometimes. Not a big Elton John fan but this is one of his good songs.

1: Waltz for a piano in A minor - Chopin
5/10 Pleasant enough, rather lacking in substance. Sounds a bit like some incidental music from a costume drama

2: Acknowledgement - John Coltrane
9/10 Some of the best played and most radical jazz ever- really pushing the boundaries. Little bit taxing for easy listening. Best heard along with the rest of the album (A Love Supreme) cos its like a chapter from a story.

3: Have a Little Faith in Me- The Bellrays (B side- not the album version)
7/10 Combination of raw soulful vocals, luscious chord progressions and a mix similar to a Motorhead album from about 1979.

4: Don`t Be Sore at Me- The Parliaments
7/10 Snappy little northern soul style no. Good for some talcum style dance moves specially if it`s played a bit fast

5: Relentless- The Aquanauts
7/10 Driving Techno with trademark UR 2 step rythm and wicked heavy bass line.

Hallucinogen - The Herb Garden (10/10)
Trance. Doesn't get very deep musically, but I don't mind. Once you turn up the volume its all good.

Shpongle - Dorset Perception (10/10)
Gotta love the Spanish guitar. Its like an old mexican medley, but then all tranced the fuck out. I love this song.

sts9 - Murph (10/10)
Murph talks too much.

Grateful Dead - Foolish Heart (10/10)
Upbeat, skippy track. Gotta love the dead.

Keller Williams - Keep it Simple (10/10)
Its Keller. Need I say more?

cantSEEme set the bar pretty high.

Ludacris - Money Maker (7/10)
Catchy beat and Luda's always entertaining, but we're not talking about some real deep lyrics.

Sweatshop Union - Union Dues (9.5/10)
Driving, head-nodder of a beat. Very talented lyrically, both in content and the way they present it.

Common - The People. I don't really remember this song, but I rated it 5 stars on my itunes. Yeah I still dig it a lot. (9/10)

2Pac - Intro (Me Against the World) (4/10)
If only this would've been ANY other song on this awesome, awesome disc. It's interesting to hear clips talking about his legal troubles, but it's not the kind of track you listen to on repeat.

R. Kelly - I can't sleep (3/10)
Kind of embarrassing to listen to R. Kelly since that whole "peeing on the underage girl" thing and subsequent Chappelle video. Drip, drip, drip...

Great responses everyone, round 2...

Cream - Toad (10/10, rowdy song, would have gotten a 8 on aesthetics alone, but throw in that awesome drum solo by baker and you have something really special, it's almost cliche at this point but it is still one of the best drum solos in modern rock music)

Spoon - The Infinite Pet (7/10, I'm a big fan of Spoon, this is a solid strut song but not my absolute favorite by the band)

No Doubt - Ache (6/10, on the sexiness of gwen's voice alone, this is a nice little ska number, full of horns, reggae guitars and organs, a fun little mid-tempo number)

Lil' Scrappy - Gangsta, Gangsta (5/10, completely average hip-pop, not much substance but notterrible enough to warrant a skip)

Keith Murray - Weeble Wobble (9/10, Murray is the shit, virtually unknown on the west coast, but thanks to some heads on this very site, exposure has been made and I dig, good production on this one, great flow, and good chorus all add up to a winner)

4: Talkin` Loud and Sayin` Nothing - James Brown
10/10 What can I say. Honest it just came up.

5: Physical (You`re So) - Adam and the Ants

1. Modest Mouse - The View - 8/10 Classic mm riff with the classic mm disco rock feel, good times track

2. Grateful dead - Friend of the Devil - 10/10 Nothing more can be said about this song. Its just good.

3. Joe Satriani - Oriental Melody - 7/10 Cool song, nice catchy riff that joe shreds mad lickz over, great use of guitar scales and you can tell he knows how to put together a good song

4. Billy Bragg & Wilco - Airline to heaven - 6/10 from "mermaid avenue vol 2" which was a bunch of woody guthry poems put to music by b.b. and wilco. this particular track is sorta meh but the album and vol. 1 are pure gold

5. The Roots - In The Music - 8/10 It's in the music, turn it up, let it knock, let it bang on the block til the neighbors call the cops.

Cake - War pigs: Five stars, definitely five stars, a classic remade with a funky fresh twist. Always topical too, works just as well for now as it did then.

Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man: Five stars for sure, I loves me some horns.

Earth, Wind and Fire - September: Its got a good beat and its easy to dance to Dick, I give it five out of five. Listen to all those horns and who doesn't like the sight of nine black guys in violet and gold all moving in step.

Bruce Willis - Respect Yourself: Die hard with a beat mother fuckers! A Staple Singers standard, bad ass tune done with a 'Bruno' attitude and plenty of brass. Five stars.

Dave Brubeck - Take Five: Theres those horns again, a musical masterpiece worthy of its own thread really. The 5/4 beat is superb. This one I'll give six stars.

Ima do six...

Gleaming Spires - Are You Ready For The Sex Girls: Its just god damned fun!

Fortunate Son - CCR (8/10) flows very nicely while delivering the upbeat quality that you expect from CCR.

Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin (9/10) what more can be said this song? great beat, references to ancient mythology, and of course the steady voice of Robert Plant at his finest.

Rainy Day, Dream Away (7/10) not one of my favorite hendrix tunes but its greatness is still clear. smooth guitar combined with the smooth lay-downs of jimi's riffs and solos, some a little too much wah effect.

Carry You - Dispatch (9/10) you probably aren't familiar with dispatch, very good group of musicians who broke up a few years ago. This song provides very easy listening vocals while you are serenaded by a simple yet elegant chord progression.

Blasphemy - Tupac Shakur (8.5/10) 2pac at his finest, this is a favorite of mine and one of 15 rap songs on my entire playlist. I don't know what attaches me to tupac...but something about his lyrics, complexities, and allusion draws me into this upbeat song of religious zeal through life.
